BILLY KEIR CAUGHT IN CHELMSFORD: DANGEROUS PAEDOPHILE SENTENCED TO 2.5 YEARS IN PRISON
In November 2019, a serious incident involving a convicted sex offender unfolded in Chelmsford, leading to his subsequent imprisonment.The individual in question, Billy Keir, aged 45, was identified as a dangerous paedophile who had been actively attempting to engage with a minor through online platforms.
Keir initiated contact with what he believed to be a 14-year-old boy, using Facebook Messenger between August 20 and August 24.
The conversations quickly escalated, with Keir transitioning the dialogue from Facebook to WhatsApp, where his messages became increasingly sexual in nature.
His intent was clear: he was seeking to meet the minor in person.
He arranged to meet the boy, who was under the age of 16, in Chelmsford.
On the day of the planned meeting, Keir arrived at the Chelmsford train station, only to be confronted by members of an online paedophile hunter group who had been monitoring his online activity.
The group’s intervention prevented any potential harm, and police were promptly called to the scene.
Following the arrest, Keir was taken into custody and subsequently charged with multiple offences.
During police interviews, he claimed he was unaware that the individual he was communicating with was only 14 years old.
Keir also argued that the language he used did not resemble that of a typical 14-year-old, attempting to deny any malicious intent.
Authorities conducted a search of Keir’s residence on Church Avenue, Chelmsford.
During the search, officers recovered a mobile phone, condoms, and lubrication—items that further implicated him in grooming and sexual activity involving minors.
It was also revealed that Keir was already subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) due to a prior conviction related to sexual offences against children.
Keir admitted to attempting to meet a child under 16 following grooming, as well as trying to cause a child to watch a sexual act.
He also acknowledged breaching the terms of his existing SHPO.
However, he denied the charge of attempting to communicate with a child under 16, which was allowed to remain on file without further prosecution.
On November 26, at Chelmsford Crown Court, Keir was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
Additionally, he received a six-year extension on his licence, reflecting the seriousness of his offences and the ongoing risk he poses to the public.
His case underscores the importance of online vigilance and the efforts of community groups working to protect children from predators.
