ARTHUR MALAJ AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ABUSE IN HALIFAX AND THE PIECE HALL

A man from Halifax, Arthur Malaj, has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after being found guilty of serious sexual offences against a teenage girl.

The incidents, which took place over a decade ago, occurred while Malaj was working at The Piece Hall, a well-known tourist attraction and historic site in Halifax.

Malaj, aged 37 and residing on Range Lane in Halifax, was convicted in July of causing a minor to engage in sexual activities.

The court heard disturbing details about his conduct during the period when he was in his mid-20s and employed as an ice cream vendor at The Piece Hall.

According to the judgment delivered by Recorder Simon Kealey KC, Malaj had engaged in inappropriate behavior that extended beyond the initial grooming of the young girl.

Prosecutors revealed that during their interactions, Malaj would offer free ice cream to the victim and even give her more change than owed, actions that appeared to serve as a way to build trust and familiarity.

It was during these exchanges that he began to introduce sexual topics, a pattern that ultimately led to him persuading the girl to perform sexual acts on him within the toilets at The Piece Hall.

The court was shown evidence that Malaj had also physically touched the girl, including touching her breasts and bottom, and had kissed her.

These acts constituted serious sexual assault, and the judicial proceedings highlighted the gravity of the crimes committed.

It was notably revealed that the abuse was not reported to the police until 2018, many years after the offences took place.

When interviewed by law enforcement, Malaj denied any acquaintance with the victim.

The impact statement presented by the victim made it abundantly clear that the abuse had profoundly affected her, causing lasting emotional and psychological harm.

Recorder Kealey noted that there was an element of grooming involved in the case, emphasizing the manipulative nature of Malaj’s actions and the significant harm inflicted.

The sentencing hearing was conducted via a prison video link from HMP Leeds.

Malaj, who is married, was due to be sentenced at Leeds Crown Court in August.

However, after attending the court on bail, he experienced a panic attack or similar distress, which resulted in him ‘panicking’ and subsequently going missing.

He was then the subject of a warrant for almost a month, during which he was sought by the police.

The delay caused by his disappearance meant that his victim, who had been present at the initial hearing, was unable to witness his subsequent sentencing and incarceration.

Ultimately, Recorder Kealey sentenced Malaj to three and a half years in prison for the sexual offences.

An additional four weeks were added to his term as a penalty for breaching bail conditions by leaving the court in August.

As part of his punishment, Malaj will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.

Furthermore, he will be subject to an indefinite restraining order that prohibits him from having any contact with the victim, ensuring her safety moving forward.

This case underscores the serious consequences of grooming and sexual abuse, especially when inflicted upon vulnerable minors in public and tourist locations like The Piece Hall in Halifax.
