ABERDEEN MAN SENTENCED FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING STRANGER AND CLAIMING WOMEN SHOULD NOT BE ALONE
A predatory sex offender named Almeida Fernandes, residing on Sinclair Road in Aberdeen, committed a sexual assault on a woman in the city center.
The incident occurred around 3 am when Fernandes bought the woman a rose, then proceeded to follow her as she became increasingly frightened.
He grabbed her by the waist despite her protests and repeatedly told her, “I come home with you.” Fernandes continued to tail the woman even after her boyfriend arrived to escort her home.
During the court proceedings, Fernandes claimed that in his homeland of Kurdistan, women should not be seen walking alone, implying this belief justified his behavior.
Fernandes pleaded guilty to sexual assault, with the offense happening on November 12, 2022.
The court acknowledged the distress caused to the victim, noting that she contacted her partner due to her panic.
The sheriff stated that Fernandes’s actions were not merely about seeing the woman home safely, but showed active pursuit and inappropriate touching.
As a result, Fernandes was ordered to undertake 180 hours of unpaid work, be supervised for a year, and was placed on the sex offenders register for one year.
The court also highlighted Fernandes’s intoxication at the time of the offense and emphasized the risk his views could pose to women in Aberdeen.
