ABERDEEN PAEDOPHILE ALAN MERCHANT CAUGHT IN DISTURBING ONLINE PLOT
In August 2019, a disturbing case unfolded in Aberdeen involving the arrest of a man accused of engaging in explicit online communications with what he believed was a 14-year-old girl. The incident was part of an operation conducted by vigilant paedophile hunters who used a fake social media profile to lure the suspect into revealing his intentions.
According to court reports, the suspect, identified as Alan Merchant, aged 44, was observed by the online vigilantes after he showed interest in numerous young girls on Instagram, many of whom appeared to be under the age of 16.
Recognizing a pattern of predatory behavior, the hunters created a fictitious Facebook profile under the alias Stacey Price, featuring a profile picture of an 18-year-old glamour model who appeared notably younger than her actual age.
This profile was used to initiate contact with Merchant, who added the fake account on December 16.
Following the connection, a conversation ensued that initially appeared innocent.
However, Stacey Price quickly disclosed that she was only 14 years old.
In response, Merchant revealed his age as 44 and proceeded to send two photographs of himself.
The dialogue soon took a sexual turn, with Merchant requesting explicit images from the supposed minor.
Stacey Price responded by sending a stock photo from a pornographic website, depicting a female’s bottom clad in pants.
In a further escalation, Merchant responded by sending three explicit images of his genitals and asked, “Can I see your b****?” The conversation then included a detailed description of what Merchant wanted to do to the girl, indicating a clear intent to engage in sexual activity.
The fake profile, Stacey Price, even offered to meet Merchant in person, to which he expressed interest.
The following day, the dialogue continued with discussions about having sex, but the paedophile hunter decided to end the conversation, closing the fake account, and immediately contacted law enforcement authorities.
The police investigation led to Merchant’s arrest and subsequent court proceedings.
At Aberdeen Sheriff Court, Merchant, who resides at Wallace House in Aberdeen, pleaded guilty to charges of sending repeated sexual communications to what he believed was a minor and to causing a child to view sexual images.
The court heard that Merchant’s actions were deliberate and predatory, aimed at exploiting a minor online.
Sheriff Morag McLaughlin deferred sentencing until October to allow for the preparation of reports and ordered Merchant to comply with the notification requirements under the Sexual Offences Act in the meantime.
His defense lawyer, Mike Monro, reserved the right to make mitigation submissions during the sentencing hearing, which will determine the severity of the penalty to be imposed.
