GLASGOW TAKEAWAY OWNER AJAY VARMA DELAYED IN SENTENCING AFTER SEX OFFENCES IN VIEWPARK
In June 2017, the legal proceedings against Ajay Varma, the former proprietor of a popular takeaway restaurant in Viewpark, were temporarily halted as the court postponed his sentencing.Varma, who previously owned Smokey Jay’s, an American-style burger establishment located on Laburnum Road in Viewpark, was scheduled to be sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court for serious criminal conduct involving a teenage girl.
Varma, aged 43 and residing on Robslee Road in Glasgow, has been in custody since the previous month after admitting to engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a girl who was only 14 and 15 years old at the time.
The offences spanned from June 2015 to May of the following year, during which he also admitted to taking indecent photographs of the girl, sharing these images, and engaging in stalking behavior that caused her significant fear and distress.
The court was informed that social workers had not yet completed a comprehensive risk assessment on Varma, which was necessary before the court could proceed with sentencing.
As a result, Sheriff Daniel Kelly decided to defer the sentencing hearing by three weeks to allow for further evaluation.
Details of the case revealed that Varma had used various methods to harass and intimidate the girl.
He made phone calls, sent text messages, and even tracked her location through electronic means.
His actions extended to humiliating her publicly by posting sexual images online and distributing them to her relatives and friends.
The court heard that he followed her and her grandmother on a bus to Bellshill, shouted abuse, and issued threats, demonstrating a pattern of stalking and harassment.
Additionally, Varma created a fake Facebook account under the victim’s name, where he posted messages designed to further torment her.
His conduct was described as deeply invasive and malicious, causing considerable alarm and distress to the young girl.
The court’s decision to delay sentencing underscores the seriousness of the case and the need for thorough assessment before final judgment is passed.
