WILLIAM MCNALLY FROM HAWICK AND CARLISLE FACES LIFE BEHIND BARS FOR GIRL-SNATCHING INCIDENT
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the communities of Carlisle and Hawick, William McNally, a 40-year-old man, is now facing the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison following a disturbing incident involving a teenage girl. The events unfolded in Carlisle last October, when McNally was observed targeting a 14-year-old girl at a bus stop on Wigton Road.According to reports, McNally approached the young girl, inquiring about the time, before suddenly pushing her to the ground in a threatening manner. He then issued a chilling warning, stating, “If you scream again, I will have to use my knife,” revealing a dangerous intent. The man, who is known to police and has ties to Hawick, then forcibly compelled the girl to walk with him for approximately half a mile, leading her into the vicinity of Orton Road.
Law enforcement officials responded to the scene exactly one week later, where they observed McNally following another teenage girl. This suspicious behavior prompted immediate action, and he was subsequently arrested the following day. During the court proceedings, Judge Paul Batty, QC, expressed his grave concern about McNally’s actions, stating, “I shudder to think what you intended to do.”
McNally had previously admitted to the charge of false imprisonment during an earlier hearing, which added weight to the case against him. The judge, emphasizing the danger McNally poses to the public, sentenced him to an indefinite term of imprisonment. The court clarified that McNally would not be eligible for parole until he has served at least three years, minus the 88 days he has already spent in custody.
The mother of the assaulted girl, whose identity remains protected by law, expressed her relief and satisfaction with the outcome of the case. She described McNally as “an animal” and criticized his apparent lack of remorse. She also praised her daughter for her bravery, noting that her daughter’s detailed description of the attacker, including his age and even his after-shave, played a crucial role in the police investigation. The mother added, “I’m very proud of her and pleased to say she is getting over this ordeal.”
