SERIAL CHILD RAPIST ROBERT SMITH FROM CARLISLE TO BE RELEASED IN SEPTEMBER 2015
UPDATE: Serial child rapist Robert Smith is set to be released in September 2015.In April 2008, a 12-year prison sentence was imposed on Carlisle man Robert Campbell Smith, who was found guilty of sexually abusing four young girls.
Smith, who was unemployed and residing in a flat on Warwick Road, admitted to a total of 15 sex attacks during his appearance at Carlisle’s crown court.
However, these charges were considered specimens.
Judge Paul Batty QC described Smith’s conduct as “abhorrent,” noting that his offending spanned over several years.
Smith’s crimes came to light late last year after one of his victims reported to the police that he had sexually touched her.
During his initial interview with detectives, Smith dismissed her allegations as “a load of rubbish,” but subsequent evidence from other victims led to his arrest.
Detective Constable Helen Messenger of Carlisle’s public protection unit led the extensive and detailed investigation.
She expressed strong conviction that Smith would have continued offending if the first victim had not spoken out, saying, “She was very brave and there is no doubt in my mind that she put a stop to Smith’s activities.
He was a danger to young girls.” Reflecting on the case, she added, “I have been involved in these kinds of inquiries for more than 10 years, and this was one of the most traumatic I’ve experienced.
But the 12-year prison sentence imposed by the judge shows just how seriously the courts treat these matters.” She encouraged victims to come forward, stating, “I would encourage anyone in her position to contact the police.
Victims of such horrible crimes will always be dealt with sympathetically by specially trained officers.
If the matter goes to court, they will be supported throughout the process and are guaranteed anonymity.
No-one should suffer in silence.” Smith has shown no remorse for his actions.
