TIMOTHY FLITCROFT FROM CARLISLE AND CROOK SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES

In December 2009, a disturbing case emerged involving Timothy Flitcroft, a church bellringer from Carlisle, who was found guilty of possessing and downloading child pornography. The authorities took swift action after discovering that Flitcroft had downloaded a total of 13 indecent images depicting children, with one of these images classified as level four, indicating it was among the most serious categories of such material.

Flitcroft, aged 38 at the time, appeared before Carlisle Crown Court where he faced serious charges related to his possession of these illicit images. The court was informed that Flitcroft had previously been involved in teaching bellringing at St Andrew’s Church located in Thursby, a detail that added a layer of concern given his access to children through his community activities.

The investigation was initiated in January when police executed raids on two residences associated with Flitcroft. One was his family home on Cumwhinton Road in Carlisle, and the other was a rented room in Crook, a town near Kendal. During these searches, law enforcement officials seized three computers and two black-and-white photographs that depicted indecent images of children. The digital devices contained more than a dozen child pornography images, alongside a significant collection of legal gay pornography, as reported by prosecutor Kim Whittlestone.

Defense attorney Greg Hoare described Flitcroft as a solitary individual who struggled with his sexuality and lacked a broad social circle. Hoare emphasized that Flitcroft’s actions had already caused him considerable personal hardship and suggested that his offenses were rooted in social inadequacy.

Judge Paul Batty QC, presiding over the case, sentenced Flitcroft to a nine-month prison term suspended for two years. Additionally, Flitcroft was placed under a two-year supervision order and was explicitly instructed not to use a computer to access the internet unless it was monitored by police authorities. The judge explained that these measures were necessary to prevent him from viewing further “revolting and disgusting” images.

Furthermore, Flitcroft was ordered to participate in a Sex Offenders Programme aimed at educating him about the risks and impacts of his actions on victims. He was also banned from working with children indefinitely and was registered on the sex offenders register for a period of ten years. As part of the Sexual Offences Prevention Order, he is prohibited from having any contact with children under the age of 16.

Judge Batty concluded by acknowledging Flitcroft’s complex character, noting that while there was some good in him, his predilection for viewing images of underage boys represented a serious and ongoing threat. The court’s decision reflected a firm stance on protecting children from exploitation and ensuring that Flitcroft would be subject to strict monitoring and restrictions to prevent further offenses.
