IAN WADUP FROM CARLISLE, MIREHOUSE, AND PICA SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES AGAINST CHILDREN

In March 2006, Ian Waddup, a man with a long history of sexual offenses against minors, was sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl. The conviction marks a significant chapter in a series of troubling incidents linked to Waddup, who has a notorious past involving child exploitation.

Waddup, who was previously residing in Pica and Mirehouse, was brought before Carlisle Crown Court to face charges that included three counts of sexual assault and one count of causing or inciting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity. Despite his denial of these allegations, the jury unanimously rejected his claims, leading to his conviction. The court had issued a stern warning to Waddup, indicating that a custodial sentence was imminent.

It was only after the conclusion of the trial that The Whitehaven News uncovered additional disturbing details about Waddup’s criminal history. In 1999, he was detained in the United States and subsequently expelled for grooming a 15-year-old girl for illegal sexual activity. This revelation added a deeper layer to his criminal profile, which already included convictions dating back to the 1970s involving offenses against children.

The 1999 incident took place in Ohio, where Waddup was jailed and later deported after attempting to meet a teenage girl he had been communicating with via email. The judge presiding over that case, Judge Sylvia Hendon, expressed her frustration at the inability to prevent Waddup, a convicted British child molester, from accessing the internet. Waddup had traveled to Ohio to meet the girl, who he had seduced through an online romance, and police arrested him as he was taking her to a hotel. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with 90 days suspended, and was expelled from the United States afterward.

Back in the UK, Waddup’s offenses against children continued to cast a shadow over his life. The recent case involved incidents that occurred at a cottage in Pica, where Waddup shared a residence with his partner. The victim, a young girl, confided in her mother about the sexual assault, which was corroborated during the trial. The jury heard that Waddup had sexually assaulted the girl and had warned her not to disclose what had happened, threatening both their futures if she did.

At the time of his arrest and trial, Waddup was living on Gray Street in Carlisle, awaiting sentencing. His criminal record, which spans decades and includes multiple convictions for child sex offenses, underscores the severity of his actions and the ongoing threat he posed to children in his community.
