THOMAS MURPHY FROM SOUTHAMPTON JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL
In May 2021, a disturbing case of child sexual abuse came to light involving Thomas Murphy, a man from Southampton, who was convicted of abusing a young girl over a period of nearly two years. The court heard that Murphy, aged 64, began his inappropriate conduct towards the girl when she was only six years old, a trauma that has left lasting scars.
Murphy systematically exploited the trust of his young victim, telling her that their secret would keep his crimes hidden from others.
The girl, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, recounted that Murphy appeared kind and caring when her mother was present, but behaved in a cruel and abusive manner when she was alone with him.
Despite her protests, she was subjected to ongoing abuse, with her telling him to stop only to be ignored as he continued his actions.
It was the girl’s mother who eventually became aware of the abuse after her daughter confided in her.
Concerned, she contacted the NSPCC to seek help.
The young girl described her feelings of fear and confusion, revealing that she would tell Murphy to stop, but he would persist.
Her distress was evident, and she described feeling sick and unable to trust adult men anymore.
She also shared that the trauma had caused her to have flashbacks during sleep, with her hands trembling out of fear that the abuse might recur.
Her statement highlighted the profound psychological impact the abuse had inflicted on her, including her wish to be a boy in hopes of avoiding future harm.
During a voluntary police interview, Murphy was confronted with the allegations.
He admitted that the situation had “got out of hand” and explained that the abuse, which began in 2018 and continued until 2020, started with seemingly innocent acts like tickling.
Murphy expressed shame over his actions, describing himself as a “bloody idiot,” and expressed reluctance about facing court proceedings, stating, “I would not want to come to court or be a witness or nothing.” The victim’s father described Murphy’s crimes as both hideous and inhumane, emphasizing the severity of the abuse inflicted on his daughter.
Murphy, who resides in George Green, Slough, appeared before Southampton Crown Court to face charges.
He pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault, but the court determined that only a custodial sentence would be appropriate.
Judge Nicholas Rowland sentenced Murphy to 30 months in prison.
Additionally, Murphy was subjected to an indefinite restraining order prohibiting any contact with his victim.
He was also handed a ten-year sexual harm prevention order and is required to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the young girl and prevent further harm.
