PAUL SHEPHARD SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN SOUTHAMPTON
In a case that has shocked the community of Southampton, Paul Shephard, a 44-year-old housing support worker, was sentenced to a decade behind bars for the serious and prolonged sexual abuse of a young girl.The disturbing revelations came to light after the teenage victim confided in her mother about the abuse, despite Shephard’s explicit request for her to keep it secret.
Shephard’s criminal actions included multiple charges, notably 12 counts of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity, actual sexual activity with a minor, and gross indecency.
These charges were brought before Southampton Crown Court, where the court heard how the abuse had a profound and damaging impact on the victim’s mental health.
The girl reportedly became increasingly shy, withdrawn, and isolated, finding it difficult to seek help or confide in anyone about her ordeal.
During the proceedings, Charles Gabb, representing Shephard, acknowledged that the defendant’s guilty plea was the only mitigating factor in the case.
Gabb emphasized that this plea spared the victim from the additional trauma of having to testify in court, which could have been an even more distressing experience.
Judge Gary Burrell QC addressed Shephard directly, condemning his actions as driven by sexual gratification.
The judge remarked, “What you did was for your sexual gratification and must have been horrendous for her,” highlighting the severity and cruelty of the offenses.
As part of his sentence, Paul Shephard was not only sentenced to ten years in prison but also ordered to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.
Furthermore, under the terms of a sexual offences prevention order, he is strictly prohibited from having any contact with girls under the age of 16, aiming to prevent any future harm and protect potential victims in Southampton and beyond.
