SWINDON MAN STEPHEN BARNETT POSES AS GIRL TO EXPLOIT TEENAGER AND DISTRIBUTE CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Swindon, Stephen Barnett, a 45-year-old resident of Derwent Drive, Upper Stratton, has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for his involvement in online child exploitation and the distribution of indecent images of children.Barnett’s criminal activities came to light after he engaged in a sinister online scheme where he impersonated a teenage girl.
His goal was to lure a 15-year-old girl into exposing herself on webcam under the false pretense of offering modelling opportunities.
Using a series of fake online profiles, Barnett, who had been operating under pseudonyms for over six years, convinced the young girl to perform acts of a sexual nature while on camera.
The young victim, initially trusting, was coerced into undressing and exposing herself.
When she hesitated or refused to continue, Barnett resorted to threats, warning her that a video of her webcam session would be shared with her Facebook friends.
This intimidation tactic was effective enough to compel her to comply, but she eventually confided in her mother, prompting her to alert the authorities.
Following the girl’s disclosure, police launched an investigation that traced the fake Facebook account back to Barnett.
During the search of his residence, officers uncovered a disturbing collection of hundreds of indecent images and videos depicting children.
Some of these illicit materials had been shared with others, indicating Barnett’s active involvement in distributing child abuse content.
Further examination of his digital footprint revealed chat logs from online chat rooms frequented by paedophiles.
In these conversations, Barnett was found asking for images of boys being raped, highlighting the extent of his depravity and intent.
At Swindon Crown Court, prosecutor Tessa Hingston detailed the case, emphasizing Barnett’s manipulative tactics and the serious nature of his crimes.
She explained that the fictitious profiles he created, including one named Linda Braid claiming to be 18 or 19, were used to persuade the young girl to undress.
Barnett also encouraged her to contact another girl, Debbie Hughes, who was also under his control.
During the trial, Barnett admitted to using multiple pseudonyms online and acknowledged his role in causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
He also pleaded guilty to 12 counts of making indecent images of children, four counts of distribution, one count of possession, and four counts of possessing extreme pornography.
Rob Ross, representing Barnett, attempted to mitigate his client’s actions by stating that Barnett had held a responsible job and was employed in a senior position at a well-known company, which was willing to retain him despite his criminal conduct.
However, Judge Douglas Field was unequivocal in his sentencing, emphasizing the severity of Barnett’s offenses.
Judge Field sentenced Barnett to a custodial term of two years and eight months.
Additionally, he ordered Barnett to register as a sex offender for life and imposed a sexual offences prevention order that restricts his liberty for five years.
The judge underscored the importance of public safety and the need to deter such heinous crimes, making it clear that Barnett’s actions warranted immediate imprisonment and lifelong monitoring.
