SONY SINGH FROM LEICESTER AND SWINDON JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a case that has shocked the communities of Leicester and Swindon, Sony Singh, a 32-year-old man originally from India, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl aged just 12.The assault took place in Swindon in late 2012, where Singh, who was known to the victim’s family, committed the heinous acts on two separate occasions.
Following a trial held last November, Singh was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault on a child under the age of 13.
However, the jury acquitted him of a more serious charge of attempted rape.
Singh, who provided an address in Leicester, maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.
The court heard that Singh had entered the UK from India, ostensibly as an economic immigrant seeking better opportunities.
Despite his conviction, questions remain about his immigration status, as authorities are uncertain about how he initially entered the country.
During the sentencing, Judge Tim Mousley QC emphasized the severity of Singh’s crimes.
He pointed out that Singh had committed the assaults on the young girl at her home, a location that heightened the vulnerability of the victim.
The judge also noted that Singh had carried out these acts more than once, which compounded the seriousness of his offenses.
The victim’s age and circumstances were considered significant aggravating factors, and the fact that Singh was possibly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the assaults was also mentioned.
Singh’s defense lawyer, Paul Trotman, argued that his client still denied any wrongdoing and was aware that he faced a lengthy prison sentence.
Trotman highlighted that Singh had been in a relationship and was working diligently to support his partner before his remand in custody last summer.
He described Singh as someone who had come to the UK from India primarily to improve his economic situation, securing employment and supporting his family financially.
Prosecutor Ian Dixey informed the court that the authorities were unaware of Singh’s exact method of entry into the UK, which meant he had no legal right to remain in the country.
He explained that Singh’s application to stay was based on supporting his partner, a prospect now impossible due to his incarceration.
The Border Agency is expected to review Singh’s immigration status once his sentence concludes, and further action may be taken at that time.
In addition to the prison sentence, Judge Mousley imposed a restraining order preventing Singh from contacting the victim for ten years.
Singh is also required to register as a sex offender for life, underscoring the gravity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
