REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER JAILED FOR 13 YEARS AFTER SPEAKING WITH UNDERCOVER OFFICER POSING AS TEENAGE GIRLS
A sex offender who had recently been released from prison has been sentenced to jail after sending explicit messages to an undercover police officer.
During February and March of 2025, Scott Hemingway communicated graphic messages to two individuals he believed to be girls aged 14 and 12, respectively.
In reality, he was speaking with an undercover police operative.
At 39 years old, Hemingway had been released from incarceration just four months earlier, following a conviction for a similar offense in December 2021.
He was detained in March and faced multiple charges, including attempting to induce a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity, attempting to cause sexual activity with a girl aged 13 to 15 (when the offender is over 18), facilitating child sex offences on two occasions, attempting to engage in sexual communication with minors on two counts, failing to comply with notification requirements as a registered sex offender, and breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Hemingway, who is homeless, appeared at Derby Crown Court on September 26 and confessed to the charges.
He received a prison term of 13 years, an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and a fine.
Detective Sergeant Richard Foster commented: “Scott Hemingway is a dangerous criminal who, despite already being caught and only just being released from prison, was unable to stop offending.
“We actively target high risk individuals like Hemingway, and we will continue to do so to keep our communities safe.”
