RYAN CURRY FROM BLACKBURN JAILED FOR GROOMING 13-YEAR-OLD BOY VIA XBOX AND SENDING INDECENT IMAGES
In May 2022, a disturbing case emerged involving Ryan Curry, a 23-year-old man from Blackburn, who was sentenced to prison for his involvement in a serious online grooming and indecency case. The court heard how Curry, residing on Derham Street in Blackburn, engaged in a prolonged and manipulative campaign to groom a 13-year-old boy through online gaming platforms, specifically via Xbox.
Ryan Curry initiated contact with the young victim through Xbox video game chats, gradually building a relationship that became increasingly inappropriate and predatory.
The court was informed that Curry not only communicated with the boy but also sent him explicit images of his genitals, crossing a dangerous line into sexual exploitation.
Furthermore, Curry requested that the boy record himself masturbating, seeking to satisfy his own sexual gratification through these exchanges.
Judge Darren Preston, presiding over the case at Preston’s Sessions House, described Curry’s conduct as “persistent and prolonged grooming,” emphasizing the severity of his actions.
The judge highlighted that such behavior is indicative of a calculated attempt to manipulate and exploit a vulnerable minor.
The court proceedings revealed that the victim’s mother noticed a significant change in her son’s behavior during 2019.
He became increasingly withdrawn at home, refused to attend school, and spent excessive amounts of time on his Xbox and phone.
Concerned, she discovered messages on his phone containing love hearts, initially believing they were from a girl.
However, further investigation revealed that the messages were from Curry, who had been communicating with her son and making suggestive remarks about playing together and masturbating.
Additionally, the mother found explicit images sent from Curry to her son.
Despite her efforts to restrict contact by purchasing a new SIM card for her son, Curry continued to reach out, sending further images of his genitals.
Some messages explicitly asked if the boy wanted a relationship, while others expressed Curry’s desire to have sex with him.
The police became involved after the mother reported her concerns.
The victim confirmed to officers that he had exchanged images with Curry and that their conversations extended over Xbox and WhatsApp, where they discussed “general stuff.” Initially, the boy felt uncomfortable and grossed out by the images but later rationalized it as acceptable, only to realize in hindsight that his actions and Curry’s behavior were wrong.
On March 2, 2020, law enforcement officers visited Curry’s home, leading to his arrest.
During police interviews, Curry admitted to contacting the boy but attempted to shift blame, suggesting that it was the victim who initiated the exchange of images.
Authorities also discovered indecent images on Curry’s mobile phone.
When re-interviewed, Curry chose not to comment.
In sentencing, Judge Darren Preston condemned Curry’s actions, stating, “You messaged the child encouraging him to masturbate and sent him images of male genitalia.
This was persistent and serious, and it caused noticeable behavioral changes in the victim.
Such conduct is indicative of grooming and exploitation.” The judge also criticized Curry for attempting to blame the victim, which demonstrated a lack of accountability.
Ryan Curry pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including three counts of making indecent images, one count of possession of prohibited images, one count of engaging in sexual communications with a child, and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
He was sentenced to 28 months in prison and was placed under notification requirements and a sexual harm prevention order for ten years, reflecting the gravity of his offenses and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
