April 2005 Man caught with child porn A MAN who downloaded 17 images of child pornography onto his computer has been given a three-year community rehabilitation order. Ralph Tossell, aged 30, of Darwin Close, Orpington, was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court after pleading guilty to making an indecent photograph of a child. Judge Stephen Waller said he was satisfied the pictures were for personal rather than commercial use and were few in number. The images were discovered in January last year when police raided Tossell’s home and seized his computer. Judge Waller said: “The majority of the images were at levels which you should not have been viewing at all. “You must have known you were crossing the border. “The harm of viewing these sites is it encourages the terrible activities which take place when these images are being made.” On sentencing, the judge called Tossell “a man of hitherto good character”. He added: “The rehabilitation order is in some ways more arduous than a short-term prison sentence.” The judge warned him if he did not co-operate with the order, he would be sent to prison. Tossell, who initially pleaded not guilty, will have his name on the sex offenders’ register for five years.
