May 2007 Twice-life perv free in 4 years A DANGEROUS paedophile who was told he should die in jail could soon be released — after his SECOND life sentence was overturned. Brian Hogg, 64, has twice received life-means-life terms for raping children as young as eight. But the sentences — imposed in 1987 and 2002 — have each been reduced on appeal. Judges at the Appeal Court in London sparked outrage last week by overturning the latest life term and replacing it with ten years. It means Hogg, who has 14 child sex convictions dating back to 1959, could be free to abuse in less than four. Furious victims yesterday blasted the decision as insane. One, now 27, said: This is like giving Hogg a licence to rape children. Hogg had admitted two child rapes in the 2002 case after linking up with another paedophile in Orpington, Kent. November 2002 Evil sex fiend preyed on boys Sixty-year-old Brian Hogg was told it was inconceivable that he would ever be freed from prison. Hogg was given a life sentence for a sickening catalogue of sex abuse on two young boys from Cambridgeshire and Kent. Passing sentence at Maidstone Crown Court on Hogg and a second paedophile Jeremy Thorpe Wing, 61, Judge Andrew Patience QC said: “You are each committed, resourceful and unrepentant paedophiles. You have destroyed the innocence of two boys. “They will never forget what has happened to them. In that sense, each of them has a life sentence.” The court had heard that Hogg and Wing filmed the abuse of their victims, aged seven and nine at the time. The abuse was discovered last August after a raid at Wing’s house in Orpington, Kent, which revealed “a paradise for children” with sweets, computer games, go-karts and tree houses. The search revealed hidden video cameras and more than 45 films, some covered in dust, showing abuse of the boys. Hogg, a fitter, of St Peter’s Way, Ellington, denied three charges of rape, one of indecency with a child and one of indecent assault. He was convicted on all the charges except one of rape. He admitted five charges of indecent assault and three of indecency with a child. Wing admitted 12 charges of indecency with a child, two of rape and four of taking indecent photographs of a child. Most of the offences were committed at Wing’s home, though the second boy was also abused in Cambridgeshire by Hogg, and during car journeys. Wing and Hogg’s long list of previous convictions, which date back 30 to 45 years were revealed in court. Wing’s offending against children started in 1966, and in 1988, when he was 46, he was jailed for 10 years. Hogg’s offences started in 1957, and in 1987 he was jailed for life. The Appeal Court later quashed the sentence and substituted 10 years. The mother of the nine-year-old Cambridgeshire victim told the News she was pleased with the verdict, but warned other parents to be on their guard. “People have got be aware that this sort of thing is happening everywhere,” she said. “Be on your guard for the sake of your children.” Detective Chief Inspector Neil Jerome, from West Kent Police, who investigated the case in conjunction with Cambridgeshire Police, said: “The extraordinary courage and strength of character of the two very young victims has been clear. “They have had to revisit horrific offences and have shown themselves to be mature beyond their years. “It is our only hope that the two life sentences will bring them a sense of closure and allow them to move on with their lives.”
