PLYMOUTH MAN PAUL LEEFSON SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES IN PLYMOUTH
In April 2023, a disturbing case unfolded at Plymouth Crown Court involving Paul Leefson, a 35-year-old resident of Greenbank Avenue, Plymouth.The proceedings revealed the extent of his involvement in the possession, distribution, and creation of extremely disturbing indecent images of children, as well as his attempts to engage in sexual communication with a minor.
Leefson appeared before the court to face multiple serious charges, including nine counts related to the possession and distribution of indecent images of children.
The images, which were classified into categories A, B, and C based on their severity, included some of the most heinous material imaginable.
Specifically, he admitted to possessing 59 still images and 39 movies of category A, the most serious classification, which he collected between August 2019 and June 2021.
Additionally, he acknowledged possessing 47 still images and 15 movies of category B, along with 135 still images and three movies of category C, all within the same timeframe.
Further charges included the distribution of indecent images, with Leefson admitting to sharing five images of category A, four of category B, and four of category C between June 8 and June 12, 2021.
The court also heard that he possessed an extreme pornographic image depicting an act involving bestiality—specifically, a person performing oral sex with a dog—an offense that was described as grossly offensive and obscene.
Leefson’s criminal activities extended beyond mere possession.
He also pleaded guilty to publishing an obscene article, which was identified as a chat conversation related to sexual activity with children, during the same period in June 2021.
The court was informed that this chat involved explicit discussions and images sent via Kik Messenger, a popular messaging platform.
One of the most disturbing aspects of the case was Leefson’s attempt to initiate sexual communication with a minor.
On June 11, 2021, he deliberately tried to engage in a sexual conversation with a 14-year-old girl, with the intent of sexual gratification.
The court heard that the communication was explicitly sexual in nature, and involved a conversation with a person identified only as a minor under the age of 16.
The case was brought to light after the National Crime Agency (NCA) received intelligence about the sharing of indecent images and online chats involving child abuse.
An investigation was launched, culminating in a search warrant executed at Leefson’s residence in June 2021.
During the search, authorities seized a mobile phone linked to Leefson, which contained a collection of the illegal images and videos, as well as chat logs indicating the sharing of such material.
The device also contained explicit conversations with what appeared to be or Leefson believed to be a 14-year-old girl, including questions about her sexual experiences with older men.
During the court proceedings, prosecutor Katie Churcher detailed the findings, emphasizing the horrific nature of the images and chats.
She highlighted that the police had to view and describe the material, which included images of children as young as one year old being sexually abused.
The judge, Judge Robert Linford, expressed his revulsion at the material, stating that it was “horrific to right-minded members of the community” and that the images “plumb the very depths of depravity.” Judge Linford specifically pointed out the most disturbing image, which depicted the anal rape of a one-year-old child.
He remarked that these images are not fabricated or computer-generated but are real children suffering abuse—daughters, granddaughters, nephews, and nieces—being exploited for the sexual gratification of individuals like Leefson.
The judge emphasized that such material fuels the demand for child abuse images and that without viewers, such abuse would not occur.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Linford acknowledged that Leefson had no prior convictions, maintained an excellent work record, and led a hard-working life.
However, he stressed that the severity of the crimes—particularly the possession and sharing of Category A images and the explicit chats—necessitated a custodial sentence.
The judge sentenced Leefson to 28 months in prison, to be served concurrently.
He also ordered that Leefson serve half of this sentence before being released on licence.
Additionally, Leefson was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register for the same period.
Leefson’s case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat child exploitation and online abuse.
The court’s decision reflects the gravity of his offenses and the societal need to protect vulnerable children from such heinous acts.
