GORDON SMITH FROM PLYMOUTH CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND SENTENCED TO SUSPENDED JAIL TERM
In March 2009, a disturbing case emerged involving Gordon Smith, a resident of Plymouth, who was found to be in possession of child abuse images on his personal computer.Initially, Smith, aged 48 and residing on Old Laira Road, claimed that he was innocent and that he had been falsely accused.
He argued that others had access to his computer and suggested that a previous tenant might have downloaded the illicit images and videos out of malice or with malicious intent.
However, this defense did not hold up in court.
Smith eventually pleaded guilty to six counts of making indecent images of children and seven counts of possessing such images, with the offenses spanning from 2001 to 2007.
The case was brought to light after police were alerted by a woman visitor to Smith’s home, who noticed the disturbing images on his computer screen.
Upon investigation, authorities discovered a collection of still images and movies stored on Smith’s computer, as well as on four CDs.
One of these CDs was marked with the label ‘Gordon’s Data,’ indicating ownership.
The images found were part of a vast collection, which included thousands of adult pornography images, alongside the child abuse material.
The child images were categorized into different levels of severity: 52 at level one, 29 at level two, seven at level three, and 19 at level four, reflecting the disturbing nature of the content.
Judge Paul Darlow presided over the case and sentenced Smith to a six-week jail term, which was suspended for two years.
Additionally, Smith was placed under two years of supervision by the Probation Service and was ordered to participate in the Thames Valley sex offenders’ rehabilitation program.
The court also mandated that Smith sign the Sex Offenders’ Register and issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order to restrict his future conduct and monitor his activities.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child abuse images, and the serious legal consequences faced by those found guilty of such offenses in Plymouth and beyond.
