PAUL DELANEY ST HELENS BUS DRIVER CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND ANIMAL CRUELTY MATERIAL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of St Helens, Paul Delaney, a 60-year-old bus driver, was found to possess a large collection of illegal and depraved images on his electronic devices. The investigation was initiated after authorities received credible information linking Delaney to the receipt of child sexual abuse images through two email addresses associated with him.
On September 3, 2020, police officers executed a search warrant at Delaney’s residence on Circular Road West in Norris Green.
During the raid, law enforcement seized his laptop and iPhone, which were later subjected to forensic analysis.
The examination uncovered a disturbing cache of 1,677 indecent photographs and videos, including both child abuse and animal cruelty material.
The court was informed that Delaney’s activities spanned nearly two years, from October 30, 2018, to September 1, 2020.
Prosecutor Christopher Hopkins detailed that the images included all three categories of indecent material involving children, and four images depicted extreme pornography involving animals.
The police investigation revealed that Delaney had been regularly viewing these images, with the judge noting that he had been “poring over” such content for approximately 700 days.
Judge David Aubrey QC addressed Delaney directly, emphasizing the gravity of his actions.
He stated that the possession and viewing of such images serve to encourage others to continue their vile trade, and that Delaney’s behavior was driven by a perverted sexual interest in children.
The judge described the images as “sickening” and “depraved,” suggesting that Delaney likely viewed these materials after returning home from his job as a bus driver, often behind closed doors.
Delaney, who has no prior criminal record, has since moved to Lower Hall Street in St Helens.
He has voluntarily sought counseling to address his behavior.
The court heard that his personal circumstances include living alone, and that his actions have resulted in significant personal and professional consequences, including the loss of his job and his long-term relationship.
In sentencing, Judge Aubrey imposed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, along with an order for Delaney to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activities.
Additionally, he was subjected to a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the same period.
The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of Delaney’s offenses and the ongoing threat posed by individuals who possess and view such illegal content.
