NATHAN DANIELS AND BRAD GREEN SHOCK FAREHAM ZOO BREAK-IN AND ANIMAL ABUSE

In a disturbing incident that has shocked the community of Fareham, two young men, Nathan Daniels and Bradley Green, were involved in a reckless and cruel act of vandalism at a local zoo. The incident took place during the early hours, when the pair managed to breach the zoo’s perimeter, causing significant distress to the animals housed within.

According to court reports, Nathan Daniels, born January 2001, who recently established a company called Ripplesweets Ltd, was responsible for cutting through the zoo’s barbed wire fence at Marwell Zoo, located near Winchester in Colden Common. His accomplice, Bradley Green, born 19 November 1998, of 33 Salterns Estate, Fareham PO16 0SE, joined him in the unlawful entry. The duo’s actions included damaging enclosures and throwing objects at the zoo’s animals, actions that have been described as both reckless and cruel.

During the break-in, Daniels and Green targeted several enclosures, including those housing giraffes, cheetahs, tigers, and penguins. The attack resulted in the animals experiencing significant distress. Court evidence revealed that Daniels pleaded guilty to damaging the penguins’ enclosure and a surrounding fence, while Green admitted to damaging the giraffe enclosure. Green also faced charges of animal cruelty specifically related to a giraffe named Ursula. In her distress, Ursula had knocked herself against the door of her enclosure, sustaining two long gashes on her leg, a clear sign of the trauma inflicted.

Footage from Snapchat captured during the incident on February 15, 2021, showed a bottle being thrown at the head of a giraffe, an act that drew widespread condemnation. Additionally, a video appeared to show a tiger being encouraged to approach a fence before it was frightened away by the aggressive behavior. The police responded swiftly, deploying multiple units including armed response officers equipped with night vision goggles, a dog unit, and a helicopter, all in an effort to apprehend the intruders amid fears that endangered animals were at risk.

Investigations revealed that the intruders had cut through a double chain-link fence to gain access to the zoo grounds. Once inside, they caused damage to the doors of various animal enclosures, including those of the giraffes and penguins. The following morning, authorities found several items in the enclosures, such as a plastic disinfectant bottle, sticks, stones, and a bucket, which were believed to have been thrown into the animals’ habitats to cause further distress. The tiger’s enclosure contained a plastic disinfectant bottle and sticks, with evidence suggesting these objects were deliberately placed to agitate the animals. The giraffe Ursula was particularly affected, with damage to her enclosure and hair found on the damaged door, indicating she had hit it in her distress.

Further disturbing evidence included a life ring found in the penguin pool, with the penguins exhibiting behaviors consistent with anxiety and distress, likely caused by the disturbance. The court heard that the damage and the objects found in the enclosures were indicative of deliberate attempts to cause harm and suffering to the animals.

During the court proceedings, Green’s defense attorney highlighted his client’s remorse, noting that Green, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, threw the bottle in an attempt to get the giraffe’s attention. The attorney also mentioned that Green had faced a backlash on social media, including death threats, and expressed that Green is fundamentally an animal lover who deeply regrets his actions. Similarly, Daniels’ defense acknowledged his lack of maturity, noting that he had lost his job working for a contractor at Marwell Zoo due to the incident.

The judge sentenced the two young men to a 12-month community order, which includes 120 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, each was ordered to pay £750 in compensation to the zoo. The judge emphasized the gravity of their actions, condemning the incident as a deplorable breach of public trust and animal welfare. He pointed out that the incident had caused widespread outrage, especially given the vulnerability of the animals involved and the fact that the zoo was closed to the public at the time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a broader context, Green had previously admitted to dumping a mutilated goat in a supermarket car park in early 2019, claiming the animal was already dead. This earlier incident was part of a series of similar acts involving animal carcasses across Hampshire, further highlighting a troubling pattern of animal cruelty associated with Green. The community and authorities continue to condemn such reckless and harmful behavior, emphasizing the importance of protecting vulnerable wildlife from such senseless acts of violence.
