In August 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving a young man from Fareham named Jack Nelson, who became entangled in a serious criminal investigation related to child abuse images. Nelson, aged 19 and residing on West Street in Fareham, initially harbored aspirations of following his older brother into the military, a path he admired and looked up to. However, his life took a dark turn after a heartbreaking revelation from his family that shattered his perception of his sibling's character.

It was revealed that Nelson’s older brother was not serving abroad as he had believed, but was instead incarcerated for child abuse offenses. This revelation profoundly affected Nelson, who was at the time enrolled in a military services diploma program. The family’s disclosure seemed to trigger a troubling fascination within Nelson, who began to explore the dark world of online chat groups discussing child abuse. His curiosity soon morphed into a disturbing pattern of behavior involving the sharing and downloading of illicit images.

Portsmouth Crown Court heard that Nelson, driven by a morbid curiosity, joined multiple social media chat groups on the platform Kik, where he downloaded and shared a significant number of illegal images over a period of two months in 2017. During this time, he accessed and distributed more than 110 images, including some depicting very young children aged between two and three years old, with one image showing a child in apparent pain. The court was informed that Nelson shared these images across 39 different chat groups, indicating a deliberate and sustained engagement with this illegal material.

Law enforcement authorities found that Nelson’s devices contained a total of 48 Category A images, which are classified as the most severe, showing children being raped. The investigation uncovered that he had also shared indecent images of children and possessed extreme pornography. Nelson later admitted to three charges of making indecent images, three of distributing them, and possessing extreme pornography. His actions demonstrated a disturbing pattern of behavior that raised serious concerns about his mental state and potential risk to others.

During the court proceedings, Nelson told probation officers that he experienced feelings of being 'mentally aroused' and described getting 'goosebumps' when viewing the images, revealing a troubling aspect of his psychological profile. His defense lawyer, Daniel Reilly, argued that Nelson’s actions might have been an attempt to understand what could have led his brother down such a dark path, suggesting that this curiosity was a factor in his offending. Reilly emphasized that Nelson’s decision to explore this forbidden material was a misguided effort to comprehend the circumstances that led his brother to commit such heinous acts.

Judge Robert Hill, considering the case, acknowledged the severity of Nelson’s offenses but also took into account his age and background. He noted that Nelson’s older brother was serving a lengthy prison sentence for child sex offenses, which appeared to influence Nelson’s own actions. The judge stated, “You might spend your time on the wing of the prison with like-minded people, people like your brother,” highlighting the potential risk of further influence within the prison environment. He further remarked, “In your background, you have an older brother who is serving a lengthy sentence for sex offending with children. With that knowledge, you set about looking at it on the internet, and within a matter of months, you had downloaded 48 Category A images along with Category B and C images.”

Ultimately, Nelson was sentenced to two years in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time immediately provided he complied with certain conditions. He was also ordered to undergo sex offender treatment, complete 20 days of rehabilitation, and perform 180 hours of unpaid work. The judge emphasized the seriousness of distributing such images, warning that it could encourage others to commit similar offenses and that Nelson’s actions were a reflection of the influence of his brother’s criminal behavior. He stated, “The evil of distribution is it’s potentially encouraging other people to do the reality in what they see in the images, what his own brother did for real. He’s chosen to see the images, that’s why his brother is serving a long term of imprisonment. He must have known how serious this is.”

As part of his sentence, Nelson was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for ten years and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order that restricts his internet use for the same period. His case underscores the ongoing concerns about online exploitation and the influence of familial criminal behavior on young individuals, especially those with aspirations of a future in the military or other disciplined services.
