MICHAEL SCOTT AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN DERBYSHIRE
A man from Derbyshire, identified as Michael Scott, has faced severe legal repercussions after a shocking series of criminal acts involving the abuse of an underage girl.The heinous conduct, which spanned over two years, led to the loss of his home, his marriage, and his employment, in addition to a substantial prison sentence.
Details of Scott’s disturbing actions were laid out in court through a comprehensive and graphic account provided by prosecutors.
The investigation revealed that Scott, aged 48 and without a fixed abode, began his inappropriate relationship with the young girl after they started communicating via social media platforms.
The situation escalated as a friend of the victim discovered naked photographs sent between the two on the girl’s phone.
Further scrutiny of Scott's mobile device uncovered videos and images depicting him engaging in sexual acts with the minor.
The criminal acts, mostly carried out in the Derby area, were described during the court proceedings as 'debasing and disgusting.' Scott was ultimately convicted and sentenced to six years in prison.
This was his first conviction, and he was also ordered to be on the sex offenders register permanently.
Additionally, he was issued an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and prohibited from any form of contact with females under the age of 18, whether direct or indirect.
Prosecutor Henry James addressed the court on Tuesday, June 7, emphasizing the nature of Scott's misconduct: 'He showered her with gifts out of a depraved and sexual interest.
She was confused.
She knew it was wrong.
Mr Scott systematically used her as a thing that he could maul and foul.' The gifts he provided included a laptop, which the victim later described in police statements as part of a ‘catalogue of foul and depraved’ acts committed by Scott.
Investigations into Scott's mobile phone also revealed disturbing internet searches, including inquiries about whether iMessages could be used as evidence in court, indicating an attempt to potentially cover his tracks.
During the sentencing, the court heard a brief victim impact statement where the young girl expressed her feelings of fear and distress.
She explained, 'At the time when this happened, I felt scared and worried.
He said he would kill me.
I did not feel safe.
I feel like I’m dealing well with what happened.' Scott, who had no prior criminal record, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a minor on March 23.
The prosecution accepted his pleas of not guilty to three counts of possessing indecent images, viewing them as an aggravating factor rather than a plea of innocence.
Defense attorney James Varley spoke on Scott’s behalf, highlighting that his client had taken steps to prepare for sentencing, including putting his narrowboat home into storage and resigning from his employment.
He also noted that Scott’s wife had left him as a consequence of his offending.
Mr.
Varley emphasized, ‘This is a man who is now 48, who stands to lose his good name.
He has worked all his life.
He will lose his livelihood as his plant operating licenses will lapse, and when he is released, he will have to start from scratch again.’ He further added that Scott had spent recent weeks explaining his situation to his family, who, despite their disapproval, had shown him support.
The defense lawyer described Scott as a man who had exhibited genuine remorse and acted with integrity during this difficult period.
Judge Shaun Smith QC sentenced Michael Scott to concurrent six-year prison terms on both charges.
Addressing Scott directly, the judge stated, ‘You showered her with gifts and attention, and over a two-year period, you developed a relationship in which you committed acts of abuse that are unimaginably vile.’ The judge highlighted that Scott had recorded some of the abuse, and although these recordings no longer lead to additional charges, they aggravate his culpability.
The sentencing remarks underscored the depravity of Scott’s actions, describing them as ‘debased and disgusting,’ carried out by a man who was otherwise considered of good character.
Scott is expected to serve half of his sentence in custody before being released on license.
Upon release, he will be subject to the court’s orders, including mandatory registration as a sex offender, ongoing sexual harm prevention restrictions, and a prohibition from any contact, direct or indirect, with females under 18 or with the victim herself.
