MICHAEL PARKES SENTENCED FOR CHILD RAPE AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN COVENTRY
In June 2004, Michael Parkes, a man residing in Coventry, was sentenced to a total of eight years in prison after being convicted of heinous crimes involving a young girl. The court heard that Parkes, aged 50 and living on St George’s Road in Stoke, had pleaded guilty to a series of serious charges related to the sexual abuse of a nine-year-old girl, as well as the possession and creation of indecent images of children.
Parkes was found guilty of raping the young girl, indecently assaulting her, and engaging in indecency involving a child.
These charges stemmed from a disturbing incident that took place during June and July of the previous year.
The court was informed that the abuse was so severe that the victim found it difficult to articulate what had happened to her, due to the grooming process that Parkes had employed.
Further details revealed that Parkes had used gifts and money to manipulate his young victim, establishing a disturbing pattern of grooming.
The court heard that he had shown her pornography, which he then mimicked by taking photographs of himself, some of which included images of him raping the girl.
The police investigation was triggered after the girl confided in her parents about the abuse.
During the police search of Parkes’ home on January 21, authorities uncovered a significant collection of child pornography.
The police discovered six CDs containing images documenting his sexual abuse, including photographs of the rape.
In total, approximately 20,000 indecent images of children of various ages were found on his computer, which had been downloaded from the internet.
The police also found that Parkes had taken and made indecent images of children, further compounding his crimes.
Prosecutor Richard Dewsbury explained that the extent of the images and the grooming process demonstrated a calculated pattern of abuse.
The police investigation was initiated after the young girl disclosed her ordeal to her parents, leading to the discovery of the extensive material and evidence against Parkes.
In his defense, Mary Loran stated that Parkes’ decision to plead guilty spared his victim and her family from the trauma of a lengthy trial.
She emphasized that Parkes had “lost everything,” including his relationship with his children, his home, and his reputation.
She also noted that he had ceased his abusive behavior when the victim asked him to stop.
Judge Richard Cole sentenced Michael Parkes to a total of eight years for the rape, five years for indecent assault, two years for taking indecent photographs of a child, and an additional 12 months for indecency involving a child.
All sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve the combined time simultaneously.
The court’s decision reflects the severity of his crimes and the impact on his young victim and her family.
