April 2012 Judge reduces sentence of sex predator AN “evil” sex predator locked up for an “appalling campaign of rape and sexual abuse” against three schoolgirls had his 21- year sentence cut by top judges. Brian Moakes, aged 62, of Queen’s Road, Malvern – but who lived in Coventry when he preyed on the girls – was jailed in October 2010 after he was convicted of four rapes, 11 indecent assaults and other sex offences. Moakes was described as “a man who perpetrated evil” by the trial judge and and Mr Justice Coulson told London’s Appeal Court: “We believe he was right to say that”. The judge, sitting with Lord Justice Gross and Mr Justice Supperstone, rejected Moakes’ bid to challenge his indecent assault convictions – but went on to rule that his total 21- year sentence was too long. Despite the appalling facts of the case, he said the Crown Court judge had strayed outside the sentencing guidelines – and cutMoakes’ term to 19 years.
