MICHAEL ATHEY CAUGHT WITH CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN WITHAM - COURT HEARS DETAILS
In a case that has shocked the local community of Witham, Essex, police uncovered a disturbing collection of indecent images of children during a raid on a residence in the town. The operation took place last summer, leading to the discovery of a total of 64 illicit images stored on the computer of Michael Athey, a 37-year-old resident of Rosebay Close.Following the investigation, Athey was brought before Chelmsford Crown Court, where he faced charges related to the possession of indecent images of children. He pleaded guilty to four charges concerning the possession of such material. The court proceedings revealed the extent of the material found on his device, which included a significant number of images that are considered highly inappropriate and illegal.
Judge Charles Gratwicke, presiding over the case, sentenced Athey to a three-year rehabilitation order. This order requires him to undergo a sex offenders' treatment program administered by the probation service. Additionally, Athey was instructed to remain on the sex offenders' register for a period of five years, a measure designed to monitor and prevent potential reoffending.
During the sentencing, Judge Gratwicke issued a stern warning, stating that any breach of the rehabilitation order would result in immediate imprisonment. The court emphasized the seriousness of the offense and the importance of ongoing supervision to protect the community.
Maria Dineen, representing the defense, provided context for Athey’s actions, explaining that he was unable to offer a clear explanation for his involvement in what she described as the 'sordid side' of computer-generated images. She highlighted that Athey had expressed genuine remorse for his actions and suggested that the likelihood of reoffending was minimal. Despite this, the court maintained strict conditions to ensure public safety and accountability for his conduct.
