MARK WARREN FROM SWINDON SENTENCED FOR CHILD MOLESTATION AT GLOUCESTER CROWN COURT
In December 2014, a disturbing case involving a man from Swindon was brought before the courts, revealing the heinous actions of Mark Warren, aged 52, who was convicted of sexually abusing a young girl.Warren's crimes, which spanned over a period of time, involved multiple instances of inappropriate touching and assault on a girl who was only 10 years old at the time.
Warren's offenses came to light after the young girl confided in her family, revealing that he had begun to molest her following the death of his wife.
The court heard that Warren's actions were not isolated incidents but occurred repeatedly, with the defendant engaging in acts such as squeezing and touching her naked breast, as well as touching her over her clothes on at least four to five separate occasions.
These assaults took place during what initially appeared to be innocent play, including tickling and roughhousing, but gradually escalated into more serious misconduct.
The prosecution, led by Rebecca Fairbairn, detailed how Warren had encouraged the girl to participate in sexual acts and had touched her inappropriately at various times.
The young girl, who was in Year Six at school during the incidents, was subjected to these assaults while Warren was supposed to be engaging in playful activities.
The court was told that the girl was initially reluctant to speak out, only revealing the abuse after counseling and after confiding in a friend of her mother.
At Swindon Crown Court, Warren was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault and one count of attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual activity.
The judge, Recorder Peter Towler, sentenced Warren to four years in prison.
Additionally, Warren was ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for the next ten years, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the potential risk he poses to the community.
During the proceedings, Warren's defense attorney, Christopher Smyth, from Colbourne Street, emphasized that Warren maintained his innocence and pointed out that a pre-sentence report indicated he was of good character prior to these allegations.
Smyth highlighted that Warren had been employed for 33 years, owned property outright, and had no significant criminal record, aside from minor infractions such as parking tickets.
He argued that Warren's life had been turned upside down by these accusations, especially after the death of his wife, which he described as devastating.
The court also heard that Warren had been suspended from his job since the allegations surfaced and was facing imminent dismissal.
Judge Towler acknowledged the repeated nature of the assaults and their profound psychological impact on the young girl.
He noted that the girl had initially been too frightened to speak out and only did so after counseling, which helped her find the courage to report the abuse to the police.
The judge expressed concern over the long-term effects on the victim, stating that the abuse had significantly affected her relationships with boys and her feelings about men in general.
He emphasized that the psychological scars from Warren's actions would likely persist, and it was crucial for her to be able to move forward with her life.
The court's decision aimed to reflect the seriousness of the offenses and to protect the community from any future harm posed by Warren.
