MARK TAYLOR FROM GLOUCESTER SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE AND ONLINE PREDATION IN GLOUCESTER AND TALBOT GREEN

In August 2020, Mark Taylor, a man residing in Manor Park, Longlevens, Gloucester, was handed a severe prison sentence after being convicted of multiple heinous crimes involving the exploitation and abuse of young girls, as well as the possession of a vast collection of indecent images.

The Gloucester Crown Court heard detailed accounts of Taylor’s disturbing criminal history, which spanned over several years and included both online grooming and physical abuse.

According to the court proceedings, Taylor, aged 49 at the time, had been engaging in illegal activities for at least five years.

His offenses included downloading numerous sexually explicit images of children ranging in age from as young as three to 15 years old.

These images were stored on his personal devices, which at the time of his arrest contained more than 1,000 indecent images and videos of minors.

The court was informed that Taylor had also been grooming and abusing three young teenagers, further highlighting the extent of his predatory behavior.

Prosecutor Mary Cowe emphasized that in each instance, Taylor had established a pattern of grooming his victims before subjecting them to sexual abuse.

The court was told that his criminal conduct was not isolated, but part of a persistent and manipulative pattern.

At the time of his arrest, authorities uncovered a significant amount of illicit material on his devices, which contributed to the severity of his sentencing.

Pre-sentence reports from the probation service painted a troubling picture of Taylor’s character, describing him as “deceitful and manipulative.” The report further stated that his behavior was “predatory and persistent,” noting his repeated ability to establish relationships with young girls through internet chat rooms, where he groomed them for abuse.

Despite these findings, Judge Ian Lawrie QC expressed a different view, criticizing Taylor’s denial of his actions and his failure to take responsibility.

The judge remarked that Taylor “fails to comply with any court order and makes little effort to help himself,” indicating a lack of remorse or insight into his criminal conduct.

During the court proceedings, Taylor pleaded guilty to 14 separate charges, which included taking indecent photographs and videos of girls between July 2015 and June 2017.

He admitted to possessing nearly 1,000 indecent images and videos of children within the period from January 2015 to June 2017.

Additionally, Taylor requested the court to consider two further offenses involving indecent images of children and one charge of possessing extreme pornography.

He also admitted to breaching a sexual harm prevention order previously imposed on him.

Judge Lawrie addressed Taylor directly, stating, “My own experience of dealing with people like you, backed up by the author of your pre-sentence report, is that you are plainly dangerous and you pose a risk to young girls.” The court sentenced Taylor to an extended prison term of 14 years, with two years to be served in custody and the remaining 12 years on license.

Furthermore, Taylor was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and to adhere to a 15-year sexual harm prevention order.

This order restricts his internet use, limits his contact with minors, and bars him from being in the company of girls under the age of 16.

In addition to his imprisonment and registration requirements, Taylor was subjected to a restraining order that prohibits him from contacting his victims directly or indirectly, aiming to prevent any further harm or intimidation.

Prior to his conviction in Gloucester, Taylor’s criminal activities included a notable incident in February 2018.

He was caught by paedophile hunters after attempting to meet a girl he believed was 13 years old at a McDonald’s restaurant in Talbot Green.

The decoy, part of the Welsh Children Protectors group, had engaged Taylor in online conversations on a dating website, where he initially claimed to be a 15-year-old girl.

However, the conversation quickly turned sexual, with Taylor asking if she was a “good girl or a naughty girl” and whether she wanted to see his genitals.

Prosecutor Jason Howells detailed that Taylor had traveled from Gloucester to Talbot Green specifically to meet the decoy, who was in fact an adult member of the paedophile hunters group.

To gain the girl’s trust, Taylor created a WhatsApp account pretending to be a 15-year-old girl, further demonstrating his manipulative intent.

The court heard that the conversation spanned several weeks, during which Taylor asked about sexual acts and expressed a desire to meet for sexual activity.

On the day of the planned meeting, Taylor was confronted by the decoy and others from the group as he arrived at the location.

A scuffle ensued, and police were called to intervene.

Taylor was arrested at the scene and initially claimed he believed the person he was speaking to was overage and that their interactions were part of role play.

However, he later pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.

Police investigations also uncovered indecent images on Taylor’s phone, including three at Category A, seven at Category B, and 22 at Category C, along with internet searches related to minors and underage children, as well as searches for extreme pornography and bestiality.

These findings underscored the seriousness of his offending.

Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke sentenced Taylor to two years in prison for this incident, emphasizing that the gravity of his actions warranted immediate custodial punishment.

Taylor’s criminal record and the evidence presented in court confirmed the dangerous nature of his conduct, which poses ongoing risks to children and young teenagers in the community.
