In August 2008, the quiet town of Gloucester was shaken to its core when the full extent of Anthony Batchelor's disturbing criminal activities came to light. The investigation revealed a pattern of heinous offenses spanning several years, involving voyeurism, sexual assault, and the exploitation of women and children.

Batchelor, aged 33, was caught in a most unsettling manner—his neighbors discovered a tiny, coin-shaped spyhole drilled into the ceiling of their bedroom. This clandestine device was used to secretly film the women and children in the vicinity, capturing intimate moments without their knowledge or consent. The discovery was made when the neighbors noticed debris on the floor and the suspicious hole in the ceiling, prompting a police investigation.

Authorities swiftly searched Batchelor’s residence in Gloucester, where they uncovered a trove of disturbing evidence. His computer contained damning footage, including videos filmed just before he committed a brutal rape at knifepoint. Batchelor’s criminal record was extensive. He admitted to a total of 14 offenses, which included rape, false imprisonment, actual bodily harm, trespassing with intent to commit sexual offenses, two burglaries, and possession of indecent images of children. Interviews with Batchelor’s former partners uncovered further disturbing details, including an incident where he imprisoned a young woman against her will, forcing her to wear a dress before slashing it with a knife. He also threatened to sexually assault her with heated hair straighteners to coerce her into intercourse.

Additional evidence showed that Batchelor had previously served three years in prison after posting explicit images of a woman online, along with her personal details, accompanied by a caption suggesting she welcomed being raped. This history of violence and exploitation underscored the dangerous nature of his actions.

At Gloucester Crown Court, Judge Mark Horton sentenced Batchelor to an indefinite term for public protection. The judge emphasized that Batchelor’s 'sexual depravity' and the suffering inflicted on his victims warranted such a severe sentence. While Batchelor will be eligible for parole after just three years and nine months, his release will depend on whether an expert panel determines he no longer poses a threat to society.

Detective Inspector Mark Chicken of Gloucestershire police commented on the case, highlighting the dedication of the investigative team and the bravery of the victims and witnesses. He stated, “What began as a straightforward burglary inquiry rapidly expanded into a major investigation into numerous sexual offenses, against multiple victims, spanning several years. Anthony Batchelor was, and remains, a sexual predator and a danger to the public.”
