MARK SMITH CAUGHT IN SWINDON TRYING TO MEET 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL AFTER ONLINE GROOMING INCIDENT
In a serious case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and the efforts of vigilant citizens to combat such crimes, Mark Smith, a 28-year-old man from Swindon, found himself in court after an attempt to meet a teenage girl he had been communicating with online. The incident unfolded in Swindon town centre, where Smith had arranged to meet a girl he believed to be 14 years old outside Primark on June 22 of this year.
Unbeknownst to Smith, he was confronted by a self-styled paedophile hunter operating under the alias ‘Danny Catcher’.
This individual, an undercover journalist, had been monitoring Smith’s online activities and intervened at the critical moment, detaining him and subsequently calling the police to handle the situation.
Swindon Crown Court heard that Smith had been under the impression he was meeting a girl named Lou, a minor, with whom he had been engaging in conversations over the internet.
Prosecutor Tessa Hingston described the circumstances as increasingly common but nonetheless troubling, emphasizing that the defendant was encouraged to partake in sexual activities.
The court was informed that the girl, who was actually a decoy, was 14 years old and had expressed a desire to engage in sexual acts.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Smith had made statements indicating his willingness to engage in sexual activity, despite knowing the girl’s age.
He told the decoy that he would not push her if she was uncomfortable, but also expressed his desire to proceed with sexual contact.
Smith later admitted to police that he had contacted the girl online and had arranged to meet her outside Primark, intending to tell her he had changed his mind about the meeting.
Previously, Smith had pleaded guilty to charges related to grooming and attempting to meet a child for sexual purposes, covering the period from June 19 to June 23.
The court heard that his actions involved causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.
In sentencing, Recorder Richard Onslow imposed a three-year community order, which includes 25 days of rehabilitation and mandatory attendance at a sex offenders’ treatment programme.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offence, stating that the decoy was not a real 14-year-old girl but a character created by an individual seeking to catch online predators.
He expressed concern over Smith’s intentions, noting that he had high hopes of engaging in sexual activity with a minor, although he claimed the girl did not have to if she did not want to.
Recorder Onslow warned Smith that any breach of the court’s orders would result in immediate imprisonment and made it clear that further offences would lead to custodial sentences.
Additionally, Smith was placed on the sex offenders’ register for five years and issued a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration, underscoring the gravity of his actions and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
