LIAM SHACKLES FROM REDDITCH BANNED FOR LIFE AFTER SEXUAL OFFENCES
In August 2022, a former teacher from Redditch faced a lifetime ban from the teaching profession following his conviction on serious sexual misconduct charges. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised concerns about safeguarding within educational environments.
It was revealed that Liam Shackles, who previously worked at Ridgeway Academy in Redditch, was convicted in March 2021 at Worcester Crown Court on multiple counts related to child exploitation.
Specifically, he was found guilty of six counts of making indecent photographs of children and one count of attempting to engage in sexual communications with a minor.
These offences highlighted a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior involving young children and underlined the severity of his crimes.
Following his conviction, Shackles received a sentence of 14 months in prison.
Additionally, he was placed on the Sex Offenders Register and subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order that will remain in effect for ten years.
As part of the court's ruling, he was also ordered to surrender all electronic devices and pay a victim surcharge of £100.
These measures aimed to restrict his access to potential victims and prevent further harm.
Although the criminal acts took place outside of his employment at Ridgeway Academy, the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) conducted a professional conduct panel to assess whether his actions impacted his suitability to work with children.
The panel concluded that Shackles’ conduct was “highly relevant to teaching, working with children, and working in an educational setting,” and therefore, he was permanently disqualified from reapplying to teach.
During the sentencing, a Crown Court Judge highlighted that Shackles had deliberately sought employment within a school environment, despite being fully aware of his serious and entrenched interest in young girls.
The judge emphasized that Shackles had taken conscious steps to gain employment on a teacher training program, which posed a significant risk to children.
No evidence was presented to suggest that Shackles’ actions were unintentional or made under duress, reinforcing the view that his misconduct was deliberate.
The panel further recommended that there should be no review period for Shackles’ ban, citing the gravity of his offences and his apparent lack of remorse or insight.
They stated, “In this case, the nature of the offences and the lack of insight or remorse mean that allowing a review period is unnecessary.” Ultimately, the panel decided that Liam Shackles from Redditch should be permanently barred from the teaching profession, with no possibility of restoring his eligibility to teach in the future.
This decision underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating cases involving sexual misconduct and the importance of safeguarding children in educational settings.
