LEE SWEET SHAKES BABY IN PLYMOUTH AND CAUSES HIS DEATH - SENTENCED FOR MANSLAUGHTER
In a tragic case that has shocked the community of Plymouth, a man named Lee Sweet was convicted of causing the death of his six-month-old son, Ruben Sweet-Harris.The incident occurred in a shared house located in the Stoke area of Plymouth, where Sweet was responsible for caring for Ruben overnight.
According to court proceedings, Sweet had initially denied any involvement in his son's injuries, which included a catastrophic brain injury and multiple rib fractures.
It was only after extensive medical investigations and a lengthy police inquiry that Sweet finally admitted to shaking Ruben.
The court heard that Sweet's actions were prompted by Ruben's persistent crying, which he could not manage, leading him to shake the infant violently until he became unresponsive and floppy.
On the morning of May 28, 2017, Sweet called emergency services around 7:25 am, reporting that Ruben had become unresponsive.
Paramedics responded swiftly to his address in Stoke, Plymouth, and transported Ruben to Derriford Hospital.
Despite medical efforts, Ruben's condition deteriorated, and he was transferred to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Bristol Hospital.
Sadly, Ruben succumbed to his injuries three days later, never recovering from the trauma inflicted upon him.
Medical examinations revealed that Ruben had suffered a 'catastrophic' brain injury and nine microfractures to his ribs.
These injuries indicated that Sweet had physically grabbed his son under the arms and shaken him back and forth with enough force to cause severe internal damage.
The investigation uncovered that Sweet had looked after Ruben overnight, and his initial denial of responsibility raised suspicions among authorities.
Detective Inspector Steve Davies, leading the Major Crime Investigation Team, provided details about the case.
He explained that from the outset, investigators suspected Sweet was not being truthful about how Ruben became unwell.
The investigation involved consulting top medical experts across the country to interpret the complex medical evidence.
After months of meticulous analysis, the evidence conclusively showed that Sweet's violent shaking caused Ruben's fatal injuries.
When confronted with the evidence during police interviews, Sweet had no choice but to admit his actions.
Despite this, he had the opportunity to confess earlier but chose to deny responsibility, prolonging the family's suffering for over a year.
The court ultimately sentenced Sweet to a term of imprisonment for manslaughter, acknowledging that while the sentence cannot bring Ruben back, it aims to provide some measure of justice and closure for the grieving family.
Throughout the investigation and trial, Ruben's family was supported by Police Family Liaison Officers, who helped them cope with the devastating loss.
