JOHN FARMER SENTENCED IN GUILDFORD AND NEWPORT FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL ASSAULTS

A man identified as John Farmer has been handed down a prison sentence following his conviction for historic sexual offenses committed in Newport and Guildford. The 84-year-old, who is also known by the name Barry, was a former priest serving at St Mary’s Church in Newport during the 1960s and 1970s before relocating to Guildford.

Farmer was found guilty of nine counts of indecent assault against a young girl aged between 12 and 14 years old, with the assaults taking place between 1974 and 1976. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the abuse, including that the victim was referred to Farmer’s lap as “the soft seat” before he inappropriately touched her. Farmer, who denied the allegations, faced a rigorous legal process that culminated in his conviction.

During sentencing, the judge acknowledged Farmer’s advanced age, his current ill health, and his previously good character, which influenced the decision to impose a three-year prison term. The sentence requires Farmer to serve half of the term before being eligible for release on licence. Additionally, he will be subject to registration on the sex offenders register for a period of ten years.

Farmer’s case highlights the ongoing efforts of authorities to address historical abuse cases, ensuring justice is served even decades after the offenses occurred. His residence in Guildford and his past work in Newport played significant roles in the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings, which have now concluded with this sentencing.
