JAMIE BAKER OF PLYMOUTH SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR RAPE AND FALSE IMPRISONMENT IN PLYMOUTH

A man from Plymouth, identified as Jamie Baker, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of heinous crimes involving sexual assault and unlawful detention.

Baker, aged 38 and of no fixed abode, appeared before Plymouth Crown Court on Friday, June 28, where he received a sentence of 12 years in prison for his actions.

Details of the case reveal that Baker was found guilty on June 6 of two counts of rape and one count of false imprisonment following a trial that uncovered the disturbing nature of his offenses.

The court was informed that the crimes took place in May of the previous year, during which Baker, who was known to the victim, contacted her and falsely accused her of theft, demanding she meet him at a property in Plymouth.

During the trial, evidence was presented that Baker, under the influence of cocaine, forcibly detained the woman.

He confined her in a room, blocking the door with a chair and jamming the handle with a DVD player to prevent her escape or anyone else from entering.

The victim was subjected to physical violence, being dragged by her hair and pushed onto a sofa, with Baker kneeling on her back.

He then tied her hands behind her with a tea towel, continuing his assault despite her pleas for him to stop.

The court heard that Baker wore gloves during the attack and attempted to drown out her cries by playing loud music.

He slapped her face, pushed her around, and forcibly moved her to another chair, where he committed two rapes.

The victim was crying and begging him to cease, but Baker responded with a vulgar remark, telling her to "f***ing shut up." The assault left her in pain and bleeding, and he further sought to humiliate her by ejaculating onto her face after pushing her onto the sofa.

Baker later showed her footage of the attack and rapes on his phone, claiming it was a joke, but the victim disbelieved him.

Despite the overwhelming evidence, Baker denied all charges.

However, the jury found him guilty of two counts of rape and one of false imprisonment.

He was acquitted of 16 other charges related to the same victim.

The lead investigator, Detective Constable Kate Dure, read a victim impact statement to the court, in which the woman described her struggle to even speak about the ordeal.

She explained that it took her nearly a year to be able to read or write about what happened, and that even thinking about it made her feel sick.

In her statement, she expressed the profound psychological damage caused by Baker’s actions, describing feelings of hurt, anger, and guilt that persist daily.

She shared that her life has been irrevocably changed, and she suffers from nightmares and panic attacks.

The victim also conveyed her feelings of failure as a woman, emphasizing the deep emotional scars left by Baker’s cruelty.

Addressing Baker directly, she wrote that his actions were "soul-destroying" and caused her severe psychological harm.

The court was told that Baker had prior convictions for football-related violence, aggravated burglary, and drug dealing, which painted a troubling picture of his criminal history.

Judge Peter Johnson, presiding over the case, noted that Baker’s pre-sentence report indicated he continued to deny the offenses, claiming they were consensual.

The judge emphasized the impact on the victim, as evidenced by her emotional statement.

Baker was sentenced to 12 years for the rapes, to run concurrently with two years for false imprisonment.

He is expected to serve two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for release on licence.

Additionally, Baker will be subject to an indefinite restraining order, prohibiting any contact with the victim in the future.

Detective Constable Kate Dure, from the Sexual Offences Investigation Team, praised the victim’s bravery in coming forward and supporting the police investigation.

She expressed hope that the sentence would encourage others to report similar crimes, assuring the public that their voices will be heard and justice served.
