In a disturbing case that unfolded in Oxfordshire, James Ryan, a 70-year-old grandfather from Southampton, found himself at the center of a serious criminal investigation after attempting to meet what he believed was a 14-year-old girl for sexual activity.The incident was orchestrated through online communications, which revealed a pattern of grooming and explicit exchanges that ultimately led to his arrest and subsequent sentencing.
Ryan had been engaging in conversations with a Facebook profile that he believed belonged to a girl named Amy.
However, this profile was not genuine; it was created by a driver in the armed forces as part of an undercover operation aimed at catching paedophiles.
Despite knowing this, Ryan continued to communicate with the profile, which quickly turned sexual in nature.
The court heard that the exchanges included questions about virginity and explicit messages offering to perform sexual acts, with Ryan expressing a desire to engage in intimate activities with the girl.
Prosecutor Alan Blake detailed to the court that the conversations began shortly after the fake profile was set up on October 31 of the previous year.
Ryan's messages became increasingly explicit, with him asking Amy if she was a virgin and suggesting that he was willing to do anything she wanted, including kissing, cuddling, or more explicit acts.
He also advised her to switch to a messaging app called Kik to avoid moderation and suggested changing his name in her phone to hide their conversations from her mother.
On the day following the initiation of contact, Ryan arranged to meet Amy at a McDonald's restaurant in Oxfordshire.
He drove from his home in Southampton to the designated location, believing he would meet a girl he thought was 18.
However, upon arrival, he was confronted by a man named Mr.
Catton, who knocked on his car window and questioned his intentions.
Ryan claimed he was meeting a friend named Amy, unaware of her true age.
It was then that Mr.
Catton informed him that Amy was only 14 and promptly contacted the police.
During the police investigation, it was discovered that Ryan had in his car Viagra tablets and condoms, which he claimed were from a few years earlier.
The Viagra, prescribed in June 2011, had an expiry date of February 2016, and the condoms, sealed in a packet of three, had an expiry date of March 2019.
Ryan's defense lawyer, Matthew Scott, explained that these items had been left in his car for a long time and that Ryan had no intention of using them.
Scott also revealed that Ryan suffers from erectile dysfunction and had not been able to achieve an erection for many years.
He described Ryan as a man whose fantasies had spiraled out of control, emphasizing his lack of prior convictions and his role as a supportive family man, including being a father figure to his grandson.
Ryan, who worked as a lift and crane engineer, was supported in court by his daughter, Tracy Ryan.
The court heard that he had admitted to attempting to meet a girl under 16 following grooming behavior in an earlier hearing.
Judge Maria Lamb, delivering the sentence, highlighted the seriousness of the case.
She noted that a member of the public had created the fake Facebook profile, which Ryan believed to be real, and that he responded with sexually explicit messages shortly after.
The judge described his actions as devious, especially given that he arranged to meet the girl while her mother was out.
In her remarks, Judge Lamb pointed out that Ryan's exchanges with the fake profile involved grooming and planning to meet the girl, which could have led to further criminal activity.
She acknowledged Ryan's health issues and his previously unblemished record but emphasized that his unhealthy interest in a child was the core reason for his appearance in court.
The judge also referenced the support from Ryan's family, including his ex-wife Norma, his son James, and his daughter Tracy, who all spoke of his supportive nature.
Concluding her sentencing, Judge Lamb sentenced Ryan to eight months in prison, imposed a sexual harm prevention order, and ordered his registration on the sex offenders' register for ten years.
The case underscores the dangers of online grooming and the importance of vigilance in protecting minors from exploitation, especially in cases where individuals like Ryan, with no prior convictions, succumb to inappropriate fantasies and attempt to act on them.
