JAMES BRITTAIN FROM TELFORD SENTENCED FOR SERIOUS INDECENT IMAGES IN SHREWSBURY

In a case that has shocked the local community, James Brittain, a 20-year-old resident of Tern Way in Wellington, Telford, was handed a substantial community order following the discovery of a large collection of indecent images stored on his personal computer.

The incident came to light during police investigations in June 2013, although Brittain was not initially charged at that time.

The authorities seized his laptop as part of an unrelated inquiry, which later revealed a disturbing cache of illicit material.

According to the proceedings at Shrewsbury Crown Court, the police found a total of 446 indecent images on Brittain’s device.

The images were classified into various levels of severity, with the majority—408 images—being categorized at the highest, most serious level, Level 5.

The remaining images included 14 at Level 1, 18 at Level 3, and six at Level 4.

The content of these images was particularly disturbing, featuring extreme material that included depictions of pre-pubescent girls and acts of bestiality, highlighting the gravity of the offense.

During the sentencing hearing, the prosecution, led by Mr.

Phillip Bradley, emphasized the severity of the images found.

He explained that the images were of an extreme nature, with the majority being of the most serious classification, which indicates a high level of concern for the safety of potential victims and the community at large.

Brittain initially denied any involvement, claiming that the images must have been planted on his laptop by a virus.

However, he later admitted to the charges on January 5 of this year, acknowledging his possession of the illicit material.

As part of his sentence, Brittain was ordered to complete a sexual offenders' treatment program, aimed at addressing underlying issues and reducing the risk of reoffending.

Additionally, he was placed under a sexual offences prevention order for five years, restricting his activities and monitoring his behavior to protect the public.

Representing Brittain, his lawyer Mr.

Paul Smith, stated that his client had no previous criminal record and expressed a sincere desire to change.

He highlighted Brittain’s willingness to undergo therapeutic intervention, emphasizing that this approach was intended to help him address the factors that led to his offending and to prevent future incidents.

The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of the offense, but also considers the potential for rehabilitation and the importance of safeguarding the community from similar conduct in the future.
