JAMES BODENHAM SENTENCED FOR RAPE OF 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN CROYDON AND SOUTH NORWOOD

In a disturbing case that has shocked the Croydon and South Norwood communities, a 26-year-old man named James Albert Bodenham has been convicted and sentenced for the heinous crime of raping an 11-year-old girl. The incident occurred in Croydon, where the young victim had gone to visit a relative, and Bodenham, who had initially appeared to be a friendly acquaintance, exploited her trust in a most reprehensible manner.

According to reports, Bodenham was identified and apprehended after police reviewed CCTV footage from the area. The footage was captured after a local officer, who had previously encountered Bodenham a few weeks earlier while he was riding a bicycle in South Norwood, recognized him. This recognition proved crucial in linking Bodenham to the crime. The police were alerted by the girl’s parents when she failed to return home on time after her visit to her relative. When she did arrive home, she was visibly distressed, prompting immediate concern and a police investigation.

Law enforcement officials conducted thorough inquiries, which revealed that the girl had been sexually assaulted in the Addiscombe area of Croydon. The investigation uncovered that she had met and befriended Bodenham earlier that day, a fact that added a layer of betrayal to the case. The detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command meticulously examined CCTV footage from the vicinity, which showed a man matching the description provided by the young victim. This evidence was instrumental in building the case against Bodenham.

Further investigations led to Bodenham’s arrest at his residence located in St Luke’s Close, South Norwood. During the arrest, officers seized clothing that matched the description given by the girl. DNA samples collected from the clothing were compared with the victim’s, providing crucial forensic evidence linking Bodenham to the assault.

On March 19, Bodenham was formally charged with two counts of rape. During subsequent court proceedings, he pleaded guilty to one count of rape, while the other charge was formally laid aside. The case culminated in a sentencing hearing at the Central Criminal Court, where Bodenham received a prison term of eight years and six months. Additionally, he was issued a Sexual Offenders Prevention Order (SOPO), which imposes restrictions aimed at preventing future offenses.
