IDREES JAFF SENTENCED IN NORWICH FOR RAPE IN CHAPELFIED GARDENS

A man identified as Idrees Jaff has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for the heinous crime of raping a male victim in a public park located in Norwich. The sentencing took place on Wednesday, 19 February 2025, at Norwich Crown Court, following a conviction that was reached after a trial held at King's Lynn Crown Court in December 2024.

During the trial, the jury unanimously found Jaff, aged 39 and residing on Berners Close in Norwich, guilty of two counts of male rape. The court's decision not only includes a ten-year prison sentence but also extends to an additional four years on extended licence, emphasizing the severity of his actions. Furthermore, Jaff has been ordered to register as a sex offender for life and will face deportation, reflecting the serious legal consequences of his conduct.

The incident in question occurred on the night of June 10, 2024, near Chapelfield Gardens, a well-known public space in Norwich. According to court proceedings, the victim was walking in the area when he was noticed by Jaff, who was a stranger to him. The court heard that Jaff followed the victim into the park and subsequently committed the assault, which was described as a rape.

During the trial, the victim provided a heartfelt statement, describing the profound and lasting impact the attack has had on his life and the lives of his family members. He characterized the aftermath as 'unbearable,' sharing that he often feels as though he has lost his mental stability. The victim recounted experiencing terrible nightmares, particularly of seeing Jaff in court smirking, and expressed that he will never forget Jaff's face. Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Hayley Green from Norfolk Constabulary's Safeguarding and Investigation unit issued a statement. She described the incident as a deeply disturbing case where a man was targeted in a public space by a stranger. Green underscored Jaff's dangerous and predatory behavior, noting that he exploited the vulnerability of his victim during late-night hours. She praised the victim's bravery and resilience throughout the investigation and trial, acknowledging the emotional struggles he faces in coming to terms with what happened. Green expressed hope that Jaff's imprisonment will provide the victim with some measure of relief and the opportunity to begin rebuilding his life after this devastating ordeal.
