SWINDON SCOUT LEADER IAN DALLOW JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN BRISTOL AND SWINDON

In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the community, Ian Dallow, a 55-year-old former Scout leader from Northbourne Road, St Andrew’s Ridge, Swindon, has been sentenced to over four years in prison for a series of sexual assaults committed against a young girl.

The abuse, which spanned an 18-month period, began when the victim was just 15 years old and continued on a near-daily basis until she found the courage to report it.

The victim, Stephanie Lawson, now 34 and residing in Bristol with her fiancée Rachael Hooper, aged 32, and her 11-year-old stepson, bravely came forward to share her harrowing experience.

Her decision to speak out follows her sentencing of Dallow, who was convicted of 10 counts of sexual assault.

The court heard that Dallow, who had been involved in the Scout movement until 2014, pleaded guilty to all charges and was subsequently sentenced to four years and two months behind bars.

Additionally, a judge ordered him to be placed on the sex offender register for life.

Stephanie recounted the emotional toll of the abuse, which began shortly after she confided in her stepfather about her sexual orientation.

She suspects that Dallow was attempting to coerce her into conforming to heterosexual norms, trying to force her into denying her identity.

The assaults, which started almost immediately after she came out as bisexual, were relentless and only ceased when she summoned the strength to tell her mother about the abuse.

Reflecting on her experience, Stephanie described the aftermath as profoundly damaging.

Once a cheerful and lively teenager, her trust in others was shattered, leading her to turn to alcohol as a way to cope with her feelings.

She was training to become a chef at Swindon College, but even now, she finds that cooking triggers painful memories and emotional distress.

Her words reveal the deep scars left by her abuser: “His abuse destroyed my trust and belief in the world.

My lack of trust in people has affected my friendships and relationships all my life.” She further explained that Dallow, whom she once loved and trusted as a father figure, betrayed her in the most heinous way.

“He was someone I loved as a father, trusted and looked up to.

I will never be able to fully trust anyone again.

He should have protected me from bad things and now I never truly feel ok or safe.

Each day is a struggle for me and I feel like I have lived in a prison in my mind since I was 15 years old.” It took Stephanie nearly two decades to come forward and report her abuse to the police.

Her mother had warned her that speaking out might cost her her family, which delayed her decision.

It was only after moving to Bristol three years ago and with the support of her partner that she was able to testify against Dallow and see justice served.

Stephanie’s message to other victims is one of hope and encouragement.

She urges those who have suffered similar abuse to come forward and report their perpetrators to the authorities.

“I want victims of abuse to know they can speak out.

What’s happening to them is despicable.

They are not the bad ones.

They can speak out and they can have a future,” she said.

“Obviously, the effect of the abuse is never going to go away.

But what’s happening or what’s happened is not their fault, they can build a life and survive.” Ian Dallow, who has not been involved in the Scout movement since 2014, was found guilty and sentenced at Swindon Crown Court.

His conviction and sentencing mark a significant step in addressing the abuse and supporting victims in the community.
