September 2008 ‘You caused that boy serious trauma’ A LOUTH man has been jailed for sexually abusing a boy after taking him to an air-raid shelter. Harold Overton (54), of Wood Lane was sent to prison for two-and-a-half years after admitting to touching the child during a day-trip to North Somercotes. Lincoln Crown Court heard the boy – who cannot be named for legal reasons – was normally a “happy-go-lucky” child. However, prosecutor Lois Colley said he had seemed unusually quiet after returning from the trip, and had mud on the back of his fleece and jogging bottoms. He was eventually interviewed by specially-trained police after making a complaint about Overton to his father, the court was told. The youngster described to officers how he was “tickled and touched” by Overton after his attacker took him to an air-raid shelter. Alan Taylor, in mitigation, said Overton – who was jailed for 18 months 11 years ago for indecently assaulting an adult – was now “deeply ashamed” of his behaviour towards the child. He added: “When he took that boy out for the day he did not have any intention of doing this. it was on the spur of the moment.” Mr Taylor said Overton accepted he had a breached a trust, adding: “He let himself down. It was something he should not have done.” Overton pleaded guilty to sexual assault and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity as a result of the incident on 16 April this year. As well as being jailed, he was banned from ever working with children and ordered to register as a sex-offender for life. Judge John Machin said only a custodial sentence could be justified and told him: “You caused that young boy serious trauma.”
