GEORGE ABSON FROM PAIGNTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ASSAULT IN DEVON
In a serious case that has shocked the community of Paignton, a 70-year-old man named Geoffrey Abson has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting a young girl. The incident, which took place in March 2022, involved Abson touching a seven-year-old girl on two separate occasions, an act that has now led to his conviction and imprisonment.According to court proceedings held at Exeter Crown Court, Abson initially denied any wrongdoing when questioned about the allegations. However, as the case progressed, he admitted that he needed help, acknowledging his actions and expressing feelings of disgust and shame. His admission came after a detailed investigation into the incidents, which revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior.
Abson, a resident of Derrell Road in Paignton, is not a stranger to the criminal justice system. He has a prior conviction for a similar offence dating back to 1989, which underscores a troubling history of sexual misconduct involving minors. This background was taken into account during sentencing, highlighting the ongoing risk he poses to children.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge David Evans addressed the court, emphasizing the severity of the crimes. He stated, “I have to sentence you for not one but two assaults on a girl aged under 13.” The judge also pointed out that Abson’s attitudes towards children were distorted and sexually inappropriate, which contributed to the decision to impose a strict penalty.
As a result, Abson was sentenced to 16 months in prison. The judge made it clear that such offenses warrant immediate incarceration, describing them as too serious for suspended sentences or alternative punishments. The court also imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order on Abson, which prohibits him from contacting girls under the age of 16, aiming to prevent any future harm and protect vulnerable minors in the community.
This case has once again brought to light the importance of vigilance and safeguarding measures in small communities like Paignton, where residents are now calling for continued efforts to protect children from predators.
