SON WITH PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA FOUND GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER IN PECKHAM
Maureen Watkins, aged 75, was discovered deceased at a residence on Ethnard Road in Peckham, located in south-east London, on 16 November. Her son, Edward Watkins, who was experiencing paranoid schizophrenia during the incident, admitted guilt at the Old Bailey to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
The court was informed that Watkins had stabbed his mother five times in the back using a kitchen knife, under the mistaken belief that he was being possessed by evil spirits.
Prosecutor Timothy Cray QC noted that Watkins had a history of mental health problems and had previously assaulted neighbors in August 2018.
The court also heard that Mrs Watkins had contacted the South London and Maudsley Trust (SLAM), expressing her distress over her son's conduct and stating she did not want him to remain living with her permanently.
As a result of the verdict, Watkins was sentenced to ongoing detention in a psychiatric facility.
