PECKHAM MAN JAILED FOR SEVERE ANIMAL NEGLECT AFTER DOG COLLAPSES FROM STARVATION
Three individuals, Rosanne Penfold, Gareth Fitton, and Shane Dixon, were all involved in neglecting a Staffordshire bull terrier named Betty, leading to her severe weight loss and rescue.Shane Dixon, a neighbour of Penfold, admitted to failing to address Betty's conditions and pleaded guilty to offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 at Westminster Magistrates' Court on September 2.
He was sentenced to a 14-week prison term, suspended for 12 months, and was also ordered to complete 10 rehabilitation activity days.
Additionally, he must pay £650 in costs and £154 in victim surcharges.
Betty was found emaciated, with wounds, ulcers, and overgrown nails, suffering from muscle wastage and severe emaciation, and was taken to an RSPCA care facility.
The court heard that Betty collapsed at a flat in Peckham, prompting urgent intervention.
The inspector described her as 'very thin,' with visible ribs, spine, hips, and urine-stained fur.
The veterinary assessment confirmed she was suffering from muscle wastage with a severity rating of one out of nine, indicating extreme emaciation.
The neglect was attributed to the failure of her caregivers to provide appropriate food, water, and clean accommodation.
Penfold and Fitton received 16-week suspended prison sentences and also had to undertake 10 days of rehabilitation activity.
Penfold had been suffering from disabilities and had been a victim of domestic abuse.
Dixon claimed he only visited the property occasionally and was being blamed for the situation.
Betty has since recovered and been rehomed.
RSPCA Inspector Hone expressed concern over the neglect and highlighted that Betty's suffering could have been avoided with proper care.
The case drew attention to the failure of those responsible to fulfill their duties of care toward the dog.
