PECKHAM TRIO HANDED SUSPENDED SENTENCES FOR SEVERE DOG NEGLECT
Three individuals, Rosanne Penfold, Gareth Fitton, and Shane Dixon, all admitted to offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 at Westminster Magistrates' Court on September 2.The case involved a Staffordshire bull terrier named Betty, who was found collapsed and severely neglected in a flat in Peckham.
Betty was described as 'very thin,' with visible ribs, spine, hips, urine-stained fur, wounds, ulcers, and overgrown nails.
A vet confirmed Betty was suffering from severe emaciation, muscle wastage, and other health issues.
Penfold and Fitton, from Southend-on-Sea, admitted to two offences each, while Dixon, from Peckham, pleaded guilty to failing to address Betty's severe weight loss.
Penfold and Fitton received 16-week prison sentences suspended for 12 months, while Dixon was given a 14-week suspended sentence and ordered to perform 100 hours of unpaid work.
All three defendants must complete 10 rehabilitation activity days and pay costs.
The case was highlighted by RSPCA Inspector Leanna Hone, who described how Betty was rescued from Blue Cross Animal Hospital after being taken there by Penfold and Fitton.
Betty had collapsed the week before in a flat on Ferdinand Drive, Peckham, and was found to be suffering from muscle wastage, ulcers, wounds, and overgrown nails.
Betty has now recovered in RSPCA care and has been rehomed, providing a story of a grim neglect leading to a positive outcome.
