LONDON MAN GUILTY OF MOTHER’S MURDER AFTER BLAMING DEMENTIA FALLS
A south London man, Steffon Hewitt, 51, has been found guilty of the murder of his mother, Vanita Nowell, 68.The victim was discovered with extensive injuries, including 28 fractures to her ribs and six to her spine, following an incident in her home in Peckham on March 8, 2020.
Hewitt claimed he had attempted CPR and that he may have broken her ribs during the process, but medical investigations concluded that this could not have caused such severe fractures.
Hewitt attempted to justify her injuries by saying they resulted from her frequent falls due to dementia, which he claimed were responsible for her injuries.
However, evidence, including forensic and medical analysis, proved otherwise.
Hewitt showed no remorse during the trial and was convicted at Isleworth Crown Court on Wednesday.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 16.
The prosecution, represented by Detective Constable Nick Stocking, stated: “This was a vicious attack but Hewitt attempted to blame it on his mother’s constant falling due to her dementia.
A combination of forensic and medical evidence proved this was not true and it is right he will now face the consequences of his actions.” The article notes that Ms.
Nowell had moved from Barbados to live with her son the year before her death.
