DAVID JONES FROM SOUTHPORT SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE AND GROOMING IN LIVERPOOL

In April 2022, a disturbing case of child abuse and grooming came to light involving David Jones, a man with a troubling history linked to Southport.

Jones, a former teaching assistant and later a qualified teacher, was found guilty of deliberately exploiting his position to groom and sexually abuse a young boy.

His actions have left a lasting scar on the victim and have raised serious concerns about safeguarding and the potential for other victims.

Jones first encountered the young boy while working at his primary school in Southport, where he was employed as a teaching assistant.

The court heard that Jones, aged 33 at the time, quickly developed an inappropriate attachment to the child, which he exploited for his own gratification.

He invited the boy to join a football club that he coached, and the young footballer accepted the invitation.

Over time, Jones began to groom the boy through a series of text messages and by offering lifts in his car, gradually integrating himself into the boy’s family life.

His parents, unaware of his true intentions, believed that their son’s friendship with Jones was beneficial, boosting his confidence and social skills.

However, the reality was far more sinister.

Liverpool Crown Court was told that Jones’s sexual abuse of the young boy led to severe emotional trauma, including an attempt by the victim to take his own life.

The court heard that Jones’s manipulative actions caused irreparable damage to the boy’s childhood and mental health.

When sentencing Jones, Judge Anil Murray described him as a “serious risk to boys,” emphasizing the calculated nature of his misconduct.

The judge stated that Jones’s actions were carefully planned to groom the child for sexual activity, driven by his own sexual gratification.

Further disturbing revelations emerged from the court proceedings.

In 2018, by which time Jones had become a fully qualified teacher, he created a fake Instagram profile posing as an 11-year-old girl.

His intent was to contact a boy who was one year older than the girl he impersonated.

The messages he sent included inappropriate comments such as “you’re fit” and requests for naked photographs.

Fortunately, the boy was suspicious of the messages and confided in his mother, who then contacted the police.

Law enforcement officials traced the IP address of the fake account to a residence where Jones had been house sitting at the time of the incident.

Initially, Jones denied any involvement when questioned by police, but later wrote to the couple, claiming he had developed an addiction to pornography, which he said had increased his interest in boys aged 12 and 13.

When re-interviewed, Jones chose to remain silent, refusing to comment further.

Judge Murray addressed Jones directly, noting that every parent of a boy he had taught would be concerned about the possibility of additional offenses.

The judge pointed out that Jones, described as an intelligent man, had used his intellect to commit these crimes.

He stated that Jones had selected the victim based on his sexual attraction from the outset and that the victim’s statement that his childhood was stolen from him was a stark testament to the impact of Jones’s actions.

The judge acknowledged that Jones had lost his career but emphasized that this was entirely his own fault.

He expressed concern about the high risk of re-offending, describing Jones as a serious danger to boys.

As a result, Jones was sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life, and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed along with a restraining order lasting 15 years.

Jones admitted to the Instagram-related offense involving inciting a child under 13 to send sexual photographs but denied two counts of sexually assaulting the schoolboy footballer—one of which involved at least five separate incidents—and an additional charge of causing the boy to engage in sexual activity.

Despite his denials, a jury convicted him after a trial.

Prosecutor Gareth Roberts detailed the nature of the sexual assaults, which included Jones placing his leg on the boy’s and rubbing his crotch, as well as asking the boy to touch his penis—an act the boy refused.

The court was told that the victim eventually grew tired of the abuse, leaving the football club and choosing not to disclose what had happened out of embarrassment.

However, when Jones later contacted the boy’s parents with rumors about him, the victim confided in his family, crying as he recounted the abuse.

His parents then contacted the police, leading to Jones’s arrest.

The victim’s impact statement revealed the profound effect the abuse had on his life.

He described ongoing counseling, struggles with anger, and attempts at self-harm, including a suicide attempt while at school.

Despite these hardships, he has since managed to regain control over his emotions.

Jones, who now works as a logistics manager for a salad production company after being promoted twice, remains a convicted sex offender, with his actions leaving a lasting mark on the lives of his victims and the community of Southport.
