‘Paper round’ attacker is jailed
A paedophile who abused a school girl almost 30 years ago has been jailed for four years and nine months.
Robert Wilby, of Southport, Merseyside, attacked the girl on her paper round over a three-year period, beginning in 1977 when she was 10-years-old.
He was caught after his victim confided to a counsellor about the abuse, Liverpool Crown Court heard.
Wilby, 61, of Norwood Road, was found guilty of five counts of child indecency and two of indecent assault.
Victim ‘scarred’
The court heard how Wilby, a former fairground worker, used to hang around by the shop where she worked.
He accosted her near the shop on a number of occasions before eventually persuading her to visit him at his bedsit, where he indecently assaulted her.
Judge Sean Duncan, sentencing, said Wilby had exhibited manipulative and predatory behaviour that had scarred his victim for life.
Wilby was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and was banned from working with children indefinitely.
