DANIEL WARDROP AND SHOCKING RAPE IN SOUTHAMPTON
The harrowing case of Daniel Wardrop, a 20-year-old man now facing severe consequences for a brutal assault, has been documented in detail during a recent court hearing in Southampton.The incident unfolded in the early hours of March 17 at a local Southampton residence, where Wardrop, who was 19 at the time, entered a woman’s home with malicious intent.
According to court records, Wardrop’s attack on the young woman was both violent and prolonged, lasting over two hours.
During this ordeal, he subjected her to rape while repeatedly threatening her and her children’s safety.
The court heard how Wardrop’s behavior became increasingly aggressive when the victim refused to respond to his advances or attempted to seek help.
This refusal prompted him to escalate his violence.
During the attack, Wardrop forcibly took the victim’s phone, preventing her from calling the police.
Prosecutor Robert Pawson explained that Wardrop not only snatched her device but also placed his hand around her throat to silence her.
When police eventually attempted to call back after the initial incident, Wardrop ordered the victim to pretend that everything was fine, warning her that failure to comply could result in her death.
Throughout the ordeal, Wardrop shadowed her movements around the flat, leaving her with very little chance to escape.
At one point, he raped her and threatened, “I am going to make your kids suffer if you don’t.” The victim later revealed to police that she was physically trembling with fear during the attack and that her children witnessed parts of the ordeal, with one describing seeing her cry and another recalling her pleading “Don’t.” Wardrop’s departure came only after he convinced the woman to promise she would not tell anyone about what transpired.
However, she was deeply distressed and managed to call her father, who described her as “hysterical” when she recounted the horrifying events.
Her father then contacted the police, leading to Wardrop’s arrest.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Wardrop had also boasted about the attack to friends shortly after it occurred.
In court, Wardrop, who does not currently have a fixed address, admitted to a single count of rape.
The victim’s statement was emotional; she explained that since the attack, she has been unable to go upstairs in her home and has been sleeping with her children in the living room.
She also took the extreme step of removing the door handle from her bedroom to prevent Wardrop from entering.
The sentencing was delivered by Judge Gary Burrell QC, who condemned Wardrop’s actions as egregiously deplorable.
Recognizing the severity of the crime, especially given the presence of her children and the brutal nature of the assault, the judge sentenced Wardrop to eight years in prison.
Additionally, he was declared a dangerous offender and was given an extended four-year license period.
The case also highlights ongoing concerns regarding police procedures, as it emerged that Hampshire police are under investigation for their handling of the initial call from the victim.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission will review how the situation was managed and why officers were not deployed immediately to respond to the distress call, further underscoring the serious implications of systemic issues in law enforcement responses to sexual violence in Southampton.
