DANIEL KING EX-PCSO FROM NEWTON ABBOT ESCAPES BANN ON CONTACT WITH CHILDREN AFTER A DECADE OF GOOD BEHAVIOR

In a significant development at Exeter Crown Court, Daniel King, a former police support officer from Newton Abbot, has successfully had a court-imposed restriction lifted after more than ten years of demonstrated good conduct since his release from prison. The judge overseeing the case, Judge Peter Johnson, decided to remove the order that previously prohibited King from having any contact with females under the age of 16, citing his progress and compliance with rehabilitation efforts.

Daniel King, now 35 years old, was originally sentenced in 2009 to 20 months in prison following his conviction for grooming and engaging in sexual activity with a 13-year-old girl. The girl, whom he met through his duties as a police community support officer (PCSO), was only 12 at the time of their initial encounter. The court heard that King, while on duty in Newton Abbot, approached her in a street while she was accompanied by friends. He exceeded his authority as a PCSO by patting her down after instructing her to remove her hoodie, socks, and shoes.

During the proceedings, it was revealed that King had sent the girl inappropriate texts, expressing that he found her attractive, loved her, and complimented her physical appearance. The relationship escalated when, in March 2006, he drove her to Teignmouth, where he engaged in inappropriate touching. These actions led to his arrest and subsequent conviction. Following his sentencing, a Sexual Offences Prevention Order was imposed, explicitly banning him from any contact with females under 16.

King’s conduct prior to this incident also drew attention. Court records disclosed that he had previously been disciplined for stalking female police colleagues and sending them sexually explicit texts. Despite being found guilty of gross misconduct and served with a harassment notice, he was allowed to return to duty as a PCSO after receiving a written warning.

Since his release from prison in 2010, King has reportedly made significant efforts to reform. An offender management report highlighted his participation in behavioral courses, acknowledgment of his past offenses, and his consistent record of staying out of trouble. His progress was deemed sufficient for the court to consider lifting the restrictions, with Judge Johnson expressing satisfaction with his rehabilitation. The judge remarked, “I am entirely happy that under modern sentencing practice, the order would not have been indefinite. I am pleased to hear of your progress.”

In a statement, a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police emphasized the rarity of such conduct among officers and staff, affirming their commitment to addressing allegations of misconduct swiftly and decisively. The case of Daniel King remains a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and the potential for rehabilitation, even in cases involving serious breaches of trust and abuse of authority.
