May 2010 FORMER SELLAFIELD WORKER JAILED FOR SEX WITH GIRLS, 15 A former Sellafield worker who kept pornographic pictures of two schoolgirls he had sex with has been sent to prison for five years. Craig Hughes, 26, of Coniston Avenue, Flimby, was also ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely and banned from having unsupervised contact with anyone under 16. Hughes pleaded guilty at Carlisle Crown Court to having sexual activity with the two 15-year-olds – and keeping pornographic pictures of them, along with pictures of other under-aged girls he had downloaded from the internet. His barrister Greg Hoare said he was an immature man who found it hard to develop friendships and relationships with people of his own age. Even after his arrest, after being bailed on condition he did not associate with schoolgirls, he was found with three of them in his car. The court heard Hughes was first questioned about his relationship with one of the girls, who had sex with him once after sending him a text message. As a result his sexual activity with the second girl was discovered, as was his collection of porn pictures and videos on his mobile. The pictures were mostly of unknown girls in their young teens, but they included photographs of the two girls he had sex with. Mr Hoare said it appeared the girls had taken the photographs of themselves and sent them to Hughes of their own volition. He said that while it was almost inevitable that Hughes would be sent to prison, he would “not prosper” under a custodial sentence because of his “relatively frail” mental state. He told the judge: “Here is a young man who has very definitely learned his lesson and who knows he must not dabble in these things again and must not under any circumstances at all consort with young girls.”
